What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Functional Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Safety Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering (typically electrical, electronics, or systems), a deep understanding of safety standards like ISO 26262 or IEC 61508, and experience in risk assessment. Familiarity with safety analysis tools (e.g., FMEA, FTA) and certifications such as TÜV Functional Safety Engineer are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure rigorous safety compliance. These competencies are crucial to identify hazards, mitigate risks, and deliver safe, reliable products or systems in regulated industries.

What does a functional safety manager do?

A functional safety manager oversees the development and implementation of safety systems to ensure compliance with safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508. They conduct risk assessments, manage safety lifecycle processes, and coordinate safety-related activities across engineering teams, often requiring certifications like CISF or SCS. Their role ensures that machinery and systems operate safely to prevent hazards and failures.

How does a Functional Safety Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Functional Safety Engineers work closely with hardware, software, and systems engineers throughout the product development lifecycle to identify and mitigate potential safety risks. They often facilitate safety assessments, conduct Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and ensure compliance with relevant safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508. Effective communication and documentation are crucial, as Functional Safety Engineers must clearly convey safety requirements and findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. This collaborative environment helps ensure that safety is integrated into every stage of development.

What is the difference between Functional Safety vs Safety Engineer?

AspectFunctional SafetySafety Engineer
CertificationsISO 26262, IEC 61508, TUV certificationsOSHA, NEBOSH, CSP certifications
Work EnvironmentAutomotive, industrial automation, machineryConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, industrial facilities
Industry UsageDesigning safety systems, risk assessment, safety lifecycle managementIdentifying hazards, implementing safety protocols, compliance audits

Functional Safety focuses on designing and managing safety systems within products and processes, ensuring they operate safely under all conditions. Safety Engineers typically perform hazard analysis, develop safety procedures, and ensure compliance. While both roles aim to enhance safety, Functional Safety is more technical and system-oriented, whereas Safety Engineers often work on safety policies and risk mitigation strategies.

What is functional safety?

Functional safety refers to the part of a system that ensures it operates correctly and safely in response to its inputs, even when there are faults or failures. It is crucial in industries like automotive, manufacturing, and energy, where malfunctioning systems could lead to hazards. Functional safety involves risk assessment, implementing safety mechanisms, and following standards such as ISO 26262. Professionals in this field work on designing, verifying, and validating safety-related systems to ensure compliance and protect people and equipment.

What do you mean by functional safety?

Functional safety in the context of a safety engineer or related role refers to designing and implementing systems that ensure safety functions perform correctly to prevent hazards or reduce risks during equipment operation. It involves adhering to standards like IEC 61508 and performing risk assessments, safety analysis, and validation to ensure reliable system performance. Professionals in this field often require knowledge of safety lifecycle management and relevant certifications such as TUV or ISA safety standards.

What is functional safety certification?

Functional safety certification verifies that a product, system, or process meets specific safety standards, such as IEC 61508 or ISO 26262, ensuring it performs reliably in safety-critical applications. For professionals in functional safety roles, obtaining relevant certifications demonstrates expertise in safety lifecycle management, risk assessment, and compliance requirements.

Which safety job pays the most?

In the field of functional safety, roles such as Safety Manager or Safety Director typically offer the highest salaries due to their leadership responsibilities and expertise in safety standards like ISO 26262 or IEC 61508. These positions often require extensive experience, certifications, and knowledge of safety-critical systems, and they can command six-figure salaries depending on the industry and location.

What we need
We are looking for a Functional Safety Engineer to join our Functional Safety team within our Engineering organization. Your job will be to coordinate and manage functional safety activities across the development lifecycle of complex robotic and automation systems. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to perform risk assessments, define safety concepts and architectures, and develop functional safety requirements that support the safe operation of advanced electro-mechanical systems.
This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in highly collaborative technical environments and enjoys working at the intersection of systems engineering, safety compliance, and product development. You will play a critical role in ensuring Symbotic's automation technologies meet rigorous industry safety standards while supporting innovation at scale.
What we do
The Functional Safety team is part of the Engineering organization and is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing functional safety activities throughout the product development lifecycle. The team works across software, controls, electrical, mechanical, systems, manufacturing, and customer-facing organizations to ensure compliance with industry safety standards and the successful delivery of safe, reliable automation systems.
The team leads safety planning, risk analysis, safety validation, and compliance efforts while partnering closely with suppliers, customers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams. Functional Safety Engineers are actively involved throughout development, deployment, and continuous improvement initiatives across Symbotic's robotics and warehouse automation platforms.
What you'll do
  • Plan and coordinate functional safety activities to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations.

  • Perform hazard analysis and risk assessments, DFMEA, FMEDA, qualitative and quantitative fault tree analysis, and related safety engineering activities.

  • Develop and manage functional safety requirements, safety concepts, and risk reduction strategies for complex electro-programmable systems.

  • Support verification and validation activities throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of functional safety processes within the product development V-model.

  • Collaborate closely with project managers, systems engineers, product development teams, suppliers, and customers on functional safety initiatives.

  • Participate in product and system design reviews to ensure safety goals and compliance objectives are achieved.

  • Conduct safety reviews throughout development and support design release sign-offs at key project milestones.

  • Proactively communicate risks, issues, and project status to engineering leadership and stakeholders.

  • Support safety-related investigations, troubleshooting, and issue resolution at customer sites as needed.

  • Maintain and track safety punch lists and corrective action items to support continuous improvement efforts.

  • Travel up to 20% to support customer engagements, testing activities, and cross-functional collaboration.

What you'll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Robotics, or related engineering discipline.
