Functional Project Manager information

What is a functional project manager?

Functional Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects within a specific business function, such as IT, finance, or human resources. They are responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing projects according to deadlines and within budget, while ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of their functional area. Unlike general project managers, they often have specialized knowledge in the area they manage, allowing them to coordinate effectively with both project teams and department stakeholders. Their role typically includes resource allocation, risk management, and communication between technical and non-technical teams.

How does a functional project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Functional Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between different departments, such as IT, operations, and business units, throughout a project. They facilitate communication, align goals, and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about project progress and changes. Collaboration often involves leading regular meetings, managing expectations, and resolving conflicts to keep the project on track. This role requires balancing technical requirements with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, business process knowledge, and usually a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Jira), workflow tools, and enterprise systems (such as SAP or Oracle) is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

What is the difference between Functional Project Manager vs Business Analyst?

Job description

Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

Title: Project Manager - Salesforce Portfolio

Position Summary:
The Project Manager is an individual contributor responsible for owning end-to-end delivery of Salesforce and Sales Operations initiatives. This role combines strong project execution with deep analytical capability to drive portfolio-level visibility, informed prioritization, and measurable business outcomes across Salesforce, CPQ, CLM, and analytics initiatives.

The ideal candidate brings deep Salesforce expertise, advanced analytical acumen, strong Jira and reporting capabilities, and a proven ability to translate data into insights that guide decisions, tradeoffs, and delivery focus-while driving accountability across cross-functional teams without direct people management responsibility.

About the Team:
The Sales Operations team supports planning, execution, and visibility across key business initiatives that improve how teams work and deliver results. The team partners with leaders and contributors across Sales, Operations, Analytics, and Technology to align priorities, manage delivery, and measure outcomes. They use tools such as Salesforce, Jira, and reporting dashboards to track work, monitor risks, and maintain a reliable operating rhythm. The team is focused on delivering clear insights, strong coordination, and practical improvements that support business goals.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Own the intake process for Sales Operations initiatives, including triage, prioritization support, and capacity-based roadmap planning.

  • Maintain the Salesforce and Sales Operations roadmap and portfolio dashboard, including status, milestones, risks, dependencies, and throughput.

  • Assess impact, effort, sequencing, and tradeoffs across initiatives using structured analysis and delivery data.

  • Lead the weekly portfolio operating rhythm and prepare clear, insight-driven updates for stakeholders and leaders.

  • Manage cross-functional project execution across Salesforce, CPQ, CLM, and analytics initiatives.

  • Develop and maintain project plans based on scope, risk, velocity, and capacity assumptions.

  • Create and manage Jira epics, stories, sprint plans, and release timelines; use Jira reporting to identify trends and delivery risks.

  • Maintain RAID logs and ensure ownership, decision-making, and follow-through are documented and tracked.

  • Coordinate launch readiness, UAT planning, stakeholder signoff, and post-launch adoption tracking.

  • Use AI-enabled tools and features to speed up project analysis, summarize status updates, and spot delivery patterns while applying sound judgment to validate outputs before sharing them.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Support communication plans, enablement readiness, and launch coordination activities.

  • Partner with analytics teams to validate dashboards, reporting, and KPI definitions.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement in delivery processes, templates, and operating practices.

  • Help identify and track corrective action plans when launches or adoption outcomes fall short of expectations.

  • Support documentation that improves visibility into progress, decisions, and dependencies.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • 5+ years of project or program management experience; experience in Sales Operations, Revenue Operations, or Salesforce delivery is preferred.

  • Strong experience with the Salesforce ecosystem; Sales Cloud is required and CPQ is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to define metrics, interpret data, identify trends, and turn analysis into action.

  • Advanced experience with Jira, including backlog management, sprint execution, and reporting.

  • Experience with project management tools such as Jira, Smartsheet, Asana, Monday.com, or MS Project.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain status, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional workstreams and drive accountability without direct authority.

  • Project management certification such as PMP, PgMP, or Agile/Scrum certification is preferred.

  • Experience with quote-to-cash processes, operational KPIs, portfolio metrics, or adoption data is preferred.
