Functional Project Manager information

What is a functional project manager?

Functional Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects within a specific business function, such as IT, finance, or human resources. They are responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing projects according to deadlines and within budget, while ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of their functional area. Unlike general project managers, they often have specialized knowledge in the area they manage, allowing them to coordinate effectively with both project teams and department stakeholders. Their role typically includes resource allocation, risk management, and communication between technical and non-technical teams.

How does a functional project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Functional Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between different departments, such as IT, operations, and business units, throughout a project. They facilitate communication, align goals, and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about project progress and changes. Collaboration often involves leading regular meetings, managing expectations, and resolving conflicts to keep the project on track. This role requires balancing technical requirements with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, business process knowledge, and usually a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Jira), workflow tools, and enterprise systems (such as SAP or Oracle) is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

What is the difference between Functional Project Manager vs Business Analyst?

Lead meaningful clinical projects that support life-changing therapies

PolyPeptide is seeking a Project Manager, Clinical Projects to lead customer-owned clinical projects from kickoff through successful delivery. In this role, you will be at the center of clinical project execution, partnering with customers, internal technical teams, Supply Chain, Commercial Operations, Quality, and Site Leadership to keep projects moving forward. You will help turn customer agreements into clear action plans, guide cross-functional teams through complex deliverables, and play a direct role in supporting programs tied to important pharmaceutical and biotech development.

Why this role matters

Clinical projects require strong coordination, clear communication, and disciplined execution. As the Project Manager, you will help ensure each project is delivered with the right balance of scope, cost, quality, timeline, regulatory expectations, and customer satisfaction.

This is an opportunity to make a visible impact across the organization while building trusted relationships with both internal partners and external customers.

What you will do
  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of customer clinical projects from initiation through completion
  • Build and manage project plans, timelines, milestones, risks, and deliverables
  • Serve as the central point of contact for customers and internal project teams
  • Lead cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams to keep work aligned, accountable, and moving forward
  • Monitor project scope and identify risks, bottlenecks, and out-of-scope activities
  • Drive milestone adherence and support on-time delivery
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain on deliveries and Commercial Operations on invoicing
  • Organize and lead internal and external project meetings
  • Prepare agendas, meeting minutes, project updates, status reports, and presentations
  • Communicate project progress clearly and consistently to customers and stakeholders
  • Escalate blocking issues and support timely decision-making
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, communication, and project execution
  • Share lessons learned and contribute to local and global continuous improvement initiatives
What you bring
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific, engineering, business, or related discipline
  • 3 to 5 years of project management experience
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a complex, regulated environment
  • Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project management tools
Preferred experience
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, CDMO, or other regulated manufacturing environments
  • PMP or other project management certification
  • Advanced degree in a related discipline
  • Experience working directly with customers or external partners
What makes you a strong fit

You are someone who can bring structure to complexity. You know how to keep teams aligned, ask the right questions, identify risks early, and communicate clearly when priorities shift. You are comfortable working with customers and internal teams, and you enjoy being the person who helps move important work across the finish line.

Why join PolyPeptide

At PolyPeptide, you will be part of a quality-driven organization supporting clinical and pharmaceutical programs with real-world impact. You will work with experienced teams, contribute to meaningful customer projects, and help improve how we deliver across the business.
