What is a Functional Medicine RN?

A Functional Medicine RN (Registered Nurse) is a nursing professional trained in the principles of functional medicine, which focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease rather than just treating symptoms. They work collaboratively with patients and interdisciplinary teams to develop personalized care plans that consider genetics, environment, and lifestyle factors. Functional Medicine RNs may provide patient education, health coaching, and support in areas such as nutrition, stress management, and preventive care. Their goal is to help patients achieve optimal wellness through holistic and evidence-based approaches.

How does a Functional Medicine RN collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop patient care plans?

As a Functional Medicine RN, you'll work closely with physicians, dietitians, and other specialists to create comprehensive, personalized care plans for patients. Your role involves gathering detailed patient histories, assisting with diagnostic assessments, and communicating findings to the healthcare team. Collaboration is key, as you'll frequently participate in interdisciplinary meetings to discuss patient progress and adjust care plans based on evolving needs. This team-based approach helps ensure holistic and effective patient support throughout their treatment journey.

Job description

IV Nurse / Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)Functional, Peptide & Hormone Optimization Clinic | Austin, TX

About Us:

Advanced Functional Medicine of Austin (AFMaustin.com) and 360 Jasmine Acupuncture & Wellness Center (360JAWC.com) are integrative clinics focused on functional medicine, peptide therapy, hormone optimization, and regenerative treatments. We operate outside the traditional insurance-based model and focus on root-cause care, performance, and long-term health outcomes.

Our patients are highly engaged and expect a higher level of care, education, and results. This is a hands-on, personalized environment—not a high-volume, task-based clinic.

We strongly encourage all applicants to review our websites, patient reviews, and overall approach before applying. Understanding who we are and how we practice is essential to determining if this is the right fit for you.

Read This First — Culture Fit Matters.

This is not a traditional nursing role, and we are not looking to train someone from scratch in functional medicine.

We are specifically looking for a nurse who already has:

  • A working understanding of functional or integrative medicine principles

  • Basic familiarity with peptides, hormone optimization, or wellness-based protocols

  • A strong interest in root-cause, systems-based care (not symptom management)

You don’t need to know everything—but you do need to come in with exposure, curiosity, and alignment with this style of medicine.

We are building a team of forward-thinking clinicians who want to grow, contribute ideas, and expand beyond conventional nursing roles.

If your background and mindset are rooted strictly in traditional, insurance-driven, or hospital-based care, this will not be a fit.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced IV Nurse or LVN who is confident in clinical skills and already aligned with functional and regenerative medicine.

This role includes IV therapy, injections, peptides, and hormone-related protocols—but also requires the ability to understand why these therapies are being used and to communicate that effectively with patients.

You will continue to learn and expand your capabilities, but you must come in with a foundation and the desire to build on it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform IV starts and manage IV nutrient and detox therapies with confidence

  • Administer peptide injections and support hormone optimization protocols

  • Conduct patient intakes with an understanding of functional medicine concepts

  • Educate and guide patients within weight loss, hormone, and wellness programs

  • Monitor patient safety, response, and overall experience

  • Maintain accurate and compliant clinical documentation

  • Support clinic operations, treatment prep, and workflow efficiency

  • Actively engage in learning and applying advanced therapies

Required Qualifications

  • Active Texas LVN or RN license in good standing

  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience (ER, infusion, wellness, or similar)

  • Strong IV/venipuncture skills

  • Foundational knowledge of functional medicine, peptides, or hormone therapy

  • Ability to think critically beyond standard protocols

  • Strong communication skills and a patient-centered approach

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in a functional, integrative, or wellness clinic

  • Hands-on experience with peptides, HRT, or IV nutrient therapy

  • Familiarity with concepts like gut health, detoxification, metabolic health, or longevity medicine

  • Comfort working in a private-pay, high-touch care model

What Makes This Role Different

  • You’ll be working in a clinic that prioritizes innovation and outcomes over routine care

  • You’ll expand your knowledge in peptides, hormone optimization, and regenerative therapies

  • You’ll be part of a team that values initiative, critical thinking, and growth

  • This role evolves as your skillset grows

Who This Is NOT For: This will not be a fit if you:

  • Are you looking to “learn functional medicine from zero”

  • Prefer clearly defined, repetitive nursing tasks with minimal variation

  • Are most comfortable in traditional, protocol-driven medical environments

  • Are not interested in peptides, hormone therapy, or root-cause medicine

  • Want a job rather than a growth-oriented clinical role

Before applying, please take the time to review AFMaustin.com and 360JAWC.com, as well as our patient feedback and overall philosophy.

If our approach resonates with you and aligns with how you want to practice medicine, we’d like to hear from you.
