To excel in performing Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs), you typically need a background in occupational or physical therapy, kinesiology, or a related health field, along with a valid professional license. Familiarity with specialized FCE software, standardized assessment tools, and relevant certifications such as Certified Functional Capacity Evaluator (CFCE) is highly desired. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing individuals' functional abilities, preparing detailed reports, and effectively collaborating with healthcare teams or legal professionals.

What is a functional capacity evaluation?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) job involves assessing an individual's physical and functional abilities to determine their capacity to work or perform specific tasks. Professionals in this role, such as physical or occupational therapists, conduct standardized tests to evaluate strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall functional capabilities. These evaluations are often used in workers' compensation cases, disability claims, or return-to-work assessments. The goal is to provide objective data that help employers, insurance companies, and medical professionals make informed decisions about a person's functional abilities and limitations.

What does a typical workday look like for someone performing functional capacity evaluations?

A typical day in an FCE role involves administering physical and cognitive assessments to individuals, documenting findings, and preparing comprehensive reports to support return-to-work decisions or disability claims. You may spend time reviewing medical histories, instructing patients through various activities, and carefully observing performance and safety. Collaboration with physicians, case managers, and employers is common to ensure evaluations meet specific referral goals. While the work is often structured and detail-oriented, each case can present unique challenges, making adaptability and ongoing learning important parts of the job.
