Job description

Who are we?
The Motley Fool is a purpose-driven financial services company on a mission to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. For 30 years we've been helping people make better investment decisions through transparency, education, and Foolish fun. We're a fast-moving, collaborative team that values high-quality work, curiosity, and initiative. We care deeply about what we do, and we're driven by the impact our work has on real people's financial futures.
What does this team do?
The Fool.com and Motley Fool Money team is at the center of how millions of investors find, read, and engage with The Motley Fool. These are two of our highest-visibility platforms-a content-rich flagship site and a fast-growing personal finance brand-and the engineers who support them are directly shaping the experience of the people we exist to serve. The team moves fast, ships real things, and takes pride in code that holds up under pressure.
What would you do in this role?
As Tech Lead, you're the engineering anchor for both platforms, the person who sets technical direction, keeps production healthy, and makes the engineers around you better. You won't be choosing between writing code and leading people; you'll be doing both, week in and week out.
More specifically, you would:
  • Own the technical direction for Fool.com and Motley Fool Money, keeping product velocity and long-term code health in honest balance
  • Stay hands-on: writing code, reviewing PRs, and pairing with your team daily
  • Mentor and grow your direct reports through 1:1s, technical coaching, and real career development conversations
  • Own production reliability for both platforms: incident response, observability, and continuous improvement of monitoring and alerting
  • Partner with product, design, marketing, and business unit leadership to translate business goals into technical strategy
  • Drive AI integration thoughtfully, both in production features and in how the team builds software
  • Maintain and evolve the engineering standards, deployment processes, and tooling that keep the team shipping confidently
  • Collaborate across business units to align technical decisions with broader company direction

The rough shape of your week: 25% hands-on coding and code review, 25% technical leadership and system design, 25% people leadership, 25% cross-functional collaboration and incident response. That split will shift. Some weeks are deep in code, others in planning or production support. Comfort with that variability is part of the job.
What we're looking for
  • You've got 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a tech lead or senior+ capacity
  • You're fluent in Python and have real production experience in Django. Wagtail experience is a plus.ย
  • You can navigate and contribute to a Next.js codebase; you don't need to be a JS specialist, but front-end shouldn't be a black box to you
  • You have a deep, practical understanding of the HTTP request/response cycle, REST API design, and how web applications work end-to-end
  • You've worked with AWS services and modern observability tooling (Datadog, Sentry, or equivalents) in production
  • You have a track record of mentoring and growing engineers-not just technically, but as people
  • You've integrated AI/LLM capabilities into production applications, or you're someone who's clearly been building toward it
  • Bonus points: experience leading high-traffic consumer web platforms, familiarity with content-driven sites and editorial workflows, and comfort with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) and modern testing approaches (Playwright or similar)

Why this role is exciting
This is a rare opportunity to lead two of The Motley Fool's most important digital platforms at a moment when the company is actively investing in AI, modernizing its stack, and building for the next chapter. You'll have real technical ownership, a team worth showing up for, and the backing of an organization that's serious about both the engineering and the mission. If you want to write code you're proud of and shape something that matters, this is the role for you.ย
ย
Please note, no sponsorship is available for this position. You must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, one of these states for employment: Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington DC, and Wisconsin.
  • Flexible, remote work environment (see our open states above)
  • No "vacation policy" (not to be confused with a "No vacation" policy)
  • Generous fully-paid parental leave
  • $1,000 annually to invest in stocks of your choice
  • Super low premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Comprehensive compensation package, including company equity
