What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fulltime Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fulltime Software Developer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development frameworks, version control systems like Git, and experience with tools such as IDEs and CI/CD pipelines are commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills that help developers collaborate effectively and respond to changing project needs. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable code and successful project delivery in dynamic development environments.

What are Fulltime Software Developers?

Fulltime Software Developers are professionals who design, build, test, and maintain software applications as their primary occupation. They work for companies or organizations on a standard full-time schedule, typically 40 hours per week. Their responsibilities can include writing code, troubleshooting issues, collaborating with other team members, and staying updated with new technologies. Fulltime roles often provide benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and opportunities for career advancement.

What are some common challenges faced by fulltime software developers in agile teams, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge for fulltime software developers working in agile teams is balancing the need for rapid iteration with maintaining high code quality. Developers often face tight deadlines for sprint deliverables, which can sometimes lead to technical debt if not carefully managed. Effective communication with team members, regular code reviews, and adopting automated testing practices can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, being proactive in sprint planning and retrospective meetings allows developers to voice concerns and collaboratively find solutions, making the work environment more supportive and productive.

Wellington Management offers comprehensive investment management capabilities that span nearly all segments of the global capital markets. Our investment solutions, tailored to the unique return and risk objectives of institutional clients in more than 60 countries, draw on a robust body of proprietary research and a collaborative culture that encourages independent thought and healthy debate. As a private partnership, we believe our ownership structure fosters a long-term view that aligns our perspectives with those of our clients.

About the Role

Software Engineer - Prism Platform

Location: Boston or Needham, MA
Role Type: Full-time
Level: Software Engineer (Non-Officer)

About the Role

Prism is Wellington's enterprise data federation platform, providing a unified interface for firmwide data access. It is a foundational system used by the majority of Wellington applications and is critical to daily business operations. Prism processes millions of data requests each day and supports thousands of users across the firm for both application-driven and ad hoc data access.

We are seeking an onshore Software Engineer to join the Prism engineering team, with a primary focus on core platform and infrastructure development. This role will strengthen onshore coverage for a mission-critical system, reduce single-point-of-failure risk, and help accelerate the platform's modernization through automation and AI-enabled engineering practices.

This position is well-suited for an engineer who wants to work on highly visible, foundational technology and grow their impact over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and support core components of the Prism platform, primarily in a Java, Spring Boot, AWS based environment
  • Own and evolve critical infrastructure services that support firmwide data access
  • Partner closely with offshore developers to provide technical direction, code reviews, and production support coverage
  • Improve platform resiliency, scalability, and performance for high-volume, low-latency workloads
  • Expand AI-driven automation across development, testing, and operational workflows
  • Participate in incident response and root cause analysis for availability or performance issues
  • Contribute to long-term platform modernization and reduction of operational risk
  • Collaborate with application teams that consume Prism to ensure reliable and efficient data access patterns

Required Qualifications

  • Strong experience with Java-based backend development
  • Experience with Spring Boot and AWS.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, APIs, and service-oriented architectures
  • Experience working on production systems with high availability and reliability requirements
  • Familiarity with modern CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and operational tooling
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex production issues
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with onshore and offshore teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with enterprise data platforms, data access layers, or federated data systems
  • Experience with NodeJS and SQL
  • Exposure to cloud-based infrastructure and platform services
  • Experience applying AI or automation to software engineering workflows (e.g., testing, code quality, operational tooling)
  • Background supporting large-scale, business-critical applications

Why This Role Matters

Prism is a critical dependency for a large portion of Wellington's application ecosystem. Even brief availability issues can disrupt key business workflows. This role directly contributes to improving platform stability, reducing operational risk, and strengthening in-house ownership of a core investment technology platform.

The position is intended to be filled at the Software Engineer (non-officer) level, with clear opportunities for growth as the platform continues to evolve and modernize.

Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications? That's ok. If you believe that you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply and welcome a chance to review your background. We are dedicated to building and maintaining a diversified workforce and considering a broad array of candidates with a variety of skill, workplace experiences, and backgrounds.

As an equal opportunity employer, Wellington Management ensures that all qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for employment without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, creed, national origin, age, ancestry, disability (physical or mental), medical condition, citizenship, marital status, pregnancy, veteran or military status, genetic information or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
