Job Description:

Bryn Mawr College invites applicants for a full-timeLaboratory Instrumentation Technician, reporting to theDirector ofScience Support Services. This positionis responsible forthe maintenance, repair, and calibration of analytical instruments and equipment used by the College's science departments and for the instruction of students in the operation of specified analytical instruments. The position administers and oversees the remote temperature monitoring system for the critical refrigerators and freezers in the science departments. The position is also responsible for the receipt and inventory of chemicals and hazardous materials used by the science departments.

This full-time staff position has an anticipated schedule of 35 hours per week and is eligible for22 daysof vacation per year, three days personal leave, generous holiday time (including an extended winter break between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day), sick leave, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, medical, dental, and vision, retirement, paid parental leave, tuition opportunities, and more. Characteristic Responsibilities:

  • Oversee theanalyticalinstrumentation in the Science Division.These dutiesinvolve routine maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repairof,but not limited to,the NMR, chromatography,spectrophotometryand mass spectrometricinstruments.Repairswillinvolveeitherin-houseservice or reaching out to vendors to have the instrument repaired.Perform annual calibration and repair of the micropipettes in the Science Division.

  • Administer and oversee the remote temperature monitoring system for the critical refrigerators and freezers on campus.Respond toalarms, during work hours and off hours,as necessary.

  • Managethe ChemicalInventory.This involves receiving all chemicals and bulk solvents into the science building, logging the chemicals into the on-line inventory anddelivery ofchemicals and supplies to theappropriate laboratories.Removal of empty chemicals from the inventory.

  • Coordinate the service contracts for certain instrumentation and be the point of contact for scheduling on-site visits and repairs.Interface with outside vendors whennecessaryfor repair and PMto workoninstrumentation such asautoclaves, microscopes, centrifuges,refrigeratorsand freezers.

  • Work with colleagues on receipt of new instrumentation and other equipment, such as refrigerators and freezers, andmovingequipment throughout the science building.

  • Assist the College's Environmental Health andSafetyOfficer,whennecessary,on issues related tolaboratoryinstrument safety andchemical safety.

  • Provide instruction on the use of the instrumentation to faculty,staff,and students. Help with methoddevelopmentasnecessary.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned or directed.

RequiredQualifications:

  • High School Diploma with technical certification/s in instrumentation, electronics, or a related field plus 3-5 years related work experience isrequired.

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experienceis preferred.

  • Must have a PA Driver's license.

  • Successful completion of satisfactory background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in equipment maintenance roles such as:

  • Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET)

  • Medical Equipment Repairer

  • Instrumentation Technician

  • Field Service Engineer (scientific or medical equipment)

  • Service Technician (laboratory equipment)

  • Calibration Technician

  • Background in analytical instrumentation (chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy, X-ray diffraction, NMR, etc.)

  • Demonstratedproficiencyin the use and troubleshooting of laboratory analytical instrumentation, such as spectroscopy; NMR spectrometer; chromatography & Separation Systems; Gas chromatography (GC) and GC-MS systems; Particle & Molecular Characterization; imaging & microscopy; and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD). Candidates do not need to have experience with every item, but working knowledge and technicalproficiencyis preferred.

  • Established knowledge of the safe and proper use, maintenance, and calibration of instrumentation.

  • Basic knowledge of chemical hazards and reactive dangers.

  • Experience working in a higher education environment is preferred.

  • Experience with 24/7 monitoring systems or on-call responsibilities is preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and oralcommunicationskills.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex systems, perform precise calibrations, and work with both mechanical and electrical components of equipment.

  • Physical mobility and strength sufficient to access instruments and perform repairs, climb steps and transport chemical containers and supplies.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, concurrent projects and tasks and competing time demands.Excellent organizational skills are necessary.

  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals, wear personal protective equipment including protective gloves, clothing, and air purifying respirators.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Vision sufficient to read computerscreenand printed materials, perform instrument repairs and services.

  • Ability to lift to 50 lb.
