How much do full time volunteer medical coder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for full time volunteer medical coder in the United States is $22.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you get a job as a medical coder with no experience?

Full-time medical coders typically need some training or certification, such as CPC or CCS, but entry-level positions may be available for those with minimal experience if they demonstrate strong attention to detail and understanding of medical terminology. Many employers offer on-the-job training to new coders, making it possible to start without extensive experience. However, obtaining certification can improve job prospects and earning potential in this field.

Will AI eventually replace medical coders?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist medical coders by automating routine coding tasks, but full replacement is unlikely in the near future. Medical coders, including full-time roles, rely on critical thinking, understanding complex medical records, and applying coding guidelines that AI tools currently cannot fully replicate. Human oversight remains essential to ensure accuracy and compliance in medical billing and coding processes.

What is it called when you volunteer but get paid?

When a full-time volunteer medical coder receives compensation for their work, it is typically considered paid employment rather than volunteering. Such roles may be classified as salaried positions, contract work, or part-time jobs, depending on the organization and employment terms. It is important to distinguish between unpaid volunteer roles and paid positions that may involve similar skills and responsibilities.

Do medical coders work full time?

Full-time medical coders typically work 40 hours per week, often during regular business hours in healthcare facilities or remote settings. Some positions may require overtime or flexible schedules depending on the employer's needs and workload.
