What is the difference between Full Time Volunteer Medical Coder vs Part Time Medical Coder?

AspectFull Time Volunteer Medical CoderPart Time Medical Coder
CertificationsTypically requires coding certifications (e.g., CPC, CCS)Same certifications required
Work EnvironmentOften volunteer settings, hospitals, clinicsPaid positions in healthcare facilities or remote
Work HoursFull-time hours, usually 35-40 hours/weekFewer hours, flexible schedule

Both roles require similar coding certifications and work in healthcare environments, but Full Time Volunteer Medical Coders work on a volunteer basis with full-time hours, while Part Time Medical Coders are paid and work fewer hours with flexible schedules.

Are full time volunteer medical coders being phased out?

Full-time volunteer medical coders are generally not being phased out, as volunteer roles often depend on organizational needs and funding rather than industry trends. However, paid medical coding positions are increasing due to the demand for certified professionals with skills in coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and many organizations prefer certified coders for accuracy and compliance.

How much do full-time volunteer medical coders make?

Full-time volunteer medical coders typically do not receive a salary, as volunteering is unpaid. However, paid medical coders in full-time positions usually earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, certification, and location. Volunteer roles often provide valuable experience but are not compensated financially.

How to get hired as a full time volunteer medical coder with no experience?

Full time volunteer medical coders typically need a basic understanding of medical coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, which can be gained through online courses or certifications such as CPC. Gaining relevant knowledge, demonstrating attention to detail, and volunteering at healthcare organizations can help build experience and improve chances of being hired for a full-time role, even without prior paid experience.
