Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineer, you typically need a degree in civil engineering or a related field, strong analytical skills, and knowledge of utility mapping standards. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ground penetrating radar (GPR), CAD software, and relevant certifications such as ASCE 38-22 is often required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills set top professionals apart in this field. These abilities are vital for accurately identifying underground utilities, minimizing project risks, and ensuring safety and compliance on construction sites.

What are some common challenges faced by Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineering professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) often encounter challenges such as incomplete or outdated utility records, congested underground environments, and unexpected site conditions. These issues can lead to project delays or safety risks. To address them, SUE teams use advanced detection technologies like ground-penetrating radar and electromagnetic locators, and maintain close communication with project stakeholders. Developing strong problem-solving skills and staying current with industry standards also help professionals navigate these challenges effectively.

What are Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineering jobs?

Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) jobs involve the identification, mapping, and management of underground utilities such as water, gas, electricity, and telecommunications. Professionals in this field use technologies like ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic locating, and vacuum excavation to locate and document the position of subsurface utilities before construction or excavation projects begin. These roles are essential in preventing costly damages, ensuring worker safety, and complying with regulations. Full-time SUE positions typically require skills in surveying, civil engineering, and utility mapping, often working for engineering firms, government agencies, or utility companies.

What is the difference between Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineering vs Utility Locator?

AspectFull Time Subsurface Utility EngineeringUtility Locator
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications like SUE Level I-IVTypically no formal engineering degree, may have certifications in utility locating
Work EnvironmentDesigning, planning, and managing utility projects, often in office and fieldPrimarily fieldwork, physically locating underground utilities
Employer & IndustryEngineering firms, construction, infrastructure projectsUtility companies, construction contractors

Full Time Subsurface Utility Engineering involves detailed planning, design, and management of underground utilities, requiring engineering expertise. Utility Locators focus on physically detecting and marking underground utilities in the field. While both roles work with underground utilities, SUE professionals handle project planning and risk mitigation, whereas utility locators perform the essential fieldwork to identify utility locations.

Job description

Description

This is a remote/virtual position. Candidate can be based anywhere within the United States.

SLC works on behalf of clients to support utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage, thermal power, and other power and infrastructure projects. We evaluate and optimize technical, commercial, environmental, social responsibility, and financial aspects of the projects for a variety of clients.

This position will require you to perform high quality design and consulting services as part of multidisciplined project teams for challenging domestic and international, power and industrial projects. These engineering services include but are not limited to earth retention systems, deep and shallow foundation design, dam stability analyses and inspections, in-situ instrumentation and monitoring programs, subsurface exploration, seismic stability and liquefaction analyses, ground improvement, groundwater supply wells, and field oversight of exploration and construction activities.

Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Prepare geotechnical reports and calculations for conformity with project specifications.
  • Prepare specifications for subsurface investigations, deep foundations, ground improvement, earth retaining systems, monitoring wells, water production wells, and general earthwork.
  • Advise power project developers to support new utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage, thermal, and other projects;
  • Evaluate new power and infrastructure projects independently to support financing.
  • Develop technical reports for applicable audiences - including owners, developers, governmental agencies and committees, and financiers
  • Conduct occasional on-site quality surveillance of subsurface exploration programs, pile installation and pile testing.
  • Occasional domestic and/or international travel
Qualifications

We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.

Essential skills and experience:

  • This position requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical focus. A Master's degree with a strong background and coursework in geotechnical engineering discipline is a plus.
  • 4+ years of detailed geotechnical design, including soil remediation, deep foundations, driven, predrilled, and helical pile design
  • Experience in working in design of power, transmission, or other heavy industry projects, including on-site quality surveillance of subsurface exploration programs, pile installation and pile testing.
  • Experience in writing and providing support documentation for Geotechnical Engineering specifications or calculations.
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical evaluation report writing

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or the ability to earn one
  • Experience specific to wind turbine generation and/or solar PV design
  • Experience with unique subsurface conditions
  • Technical evaluation report writing
  • Ability and willingness to travel, both domestic and international.
  • Multi-discipline teamwork (i.e. design projects, co-ops)
  • Data analysis and visualization
  • Project finance or business acumen
  • Conceptual project design
  • Construction project management and/or scheduling software knowledge
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to work with and guide others
  • Project planning, leadership, and organizational skills
AI & Automation at Sargent & Lundy

In this role, we expect people to be willing or able to lead others who use modern tools:

  • You are expected to lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Leaders in these roles often direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.
  • Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.
