Job description

TIAG is hiring a SolarWinds System Administrator to join our team in support of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) in a full time capacity. This position is fully remote. This position requires an Active Secret to start work, so US or Naturalized Citizenship is a requirement for considerations.

The SolarWinds Administrator is responsible for operating, optimizing, extending, and integrating the enterprise SolarWinds Orion platform.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide server-side support for SolarWinds applications, including patching, troubleshooting, and general maintenance of a HyperV-based virtual environment.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the network monitoring solution, including the design, planning, and rollout of monitoring to new and existing systems.
  • Install, test, maintain, troubleshoot, upgrade, and document enterprise network and system monitoring tools.
  • Diagnose, analyze, and resolve complex network performance issues and technical challenges using SolarWinds data.
  • Design and maintain highly available (HA) and scalable architectures, including managing Additional Polling Engines (APEs), Additional Web Servers (AWS), and High Availability deployments.
  • Develop and implement Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies for the SolarWinds environment to ensure continuous monitoring capabilities.
  • Architect comprehensive monitoring strategies across various SolarWinds modules (NPM, SAM, NTA, NCM, VMAN, DPA, etc.) to provide holistic visibility into on-premise and cloud infrastructures.
  • Develop custom scripts and automation using PowerShell, Python, SWQL (SolarWinds Query Language), and the Orion REST API (SWIS) to automate administrative tasks and auto-remediate known issues.
  • Integrate SolarWinds with third-party systems, such as ITSM platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira) for automated ticketing, and alert management tools (e.g., PagerDuty, xMatters).
  • Design complex, audience-specific dashboards and reports for C-level executives, IT management, and engineering teams.
  • Engineer advanced alerting mechanisms to reduce alert noise/fatigue, utilizing complex trigger conditions, dependencies, and escalation routing.
  • Create and maintain custom SAM (Server & Application Monitor) templates to monitor proprietary or niche enterprise applications.
  • Collaborate with DBAs to optimize the SolarWinds SQL database, ensuring proper indexing, maintenance plans, and query performance to prevent platform latency.
  • Perform capacity planning for the SolarWinds infrastructure, monitoring poller performance and database size to forecast future hardware or licensing needs.
  • Serve as the ultimate point of escalation (Tier 3/4) for complex monitoring and platform-related issues.
  • Implement and manage Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), ensuring strict security boundaries and least-privilege access for all platform users.
  • Ensure the SolarWinds environment adheres to enterprise security standards (e.g., applying STIGs, managing SSL certificates, auditing platform access).
  • Mentor and train junior administrators and NOC staff on SolarWinds best practices, navigation, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical design documents for the monitoring environment.
  • A minimum of 5 years professional experience, a Bachelors degree is preferred but not required
  • 3+ years of experience supporting SolarWinds is required
  • Solarwinds certified required
  • CompTIA Sec+ required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security clearance is required
