Position Summary:

Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a dedicated, team-oriented Area Inspector to support fixed equipment mechanical integrity at the St. Paul Park Refinery. The Area Inspector is responsible for performing, coordinating, reviewing, and documenting inspections of refinery fixed equipment. This role ensures compliance with all applicable pressure equipment laws, regulations, and relevant company and industry codes, standards, and recommended practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure regulatory, jurisdictional, and company-required inspections are completed and documented for fixed equipment.
  • Develop and execute inspection plans, intervals, and lifecycle strategies based on equipment condition, RBI results, and operating history.
  • Perform and/or coordinate visual inspections, thickness monitoring, NDE activities, and condition assessments during routine operations and turnarounds.
  • Evaluate inspection findings and NDE results to develop repair, replacement, fitness-for-service, and risk mitigation recommendations.
  • Maintain inspection records, technical reports, and equipment documentation within inspection data management systems.
  • Provide mechanical integrity support related to corrosion, metallurgy, welding, damage mechanisms, materials selection, and repair methods.
  • Coordinate inspection activities and requirements with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Reliability, and project teams.
  • Support Mechanical Integrity and PSM programs through participation in RBI studies, Damage Mechanism Reviews, PHAs, failure investigations, MOC reviews, and continuous reliability improvement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED required.
  • Current American Petroleum Institute (API) 510 and 570 certifications required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in refining, petrochemical, or a related industry preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must be available to provide on-call and extended shutdown support as required, including nights and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • API 653, API 571, API 580, and/or API 581 knowledge or certification.
  • AWS-CWI or SCWI certification.
  • Experience with Risk Based Inspections (RBI).
  • Experience with refinery damage mechanisms, corrosion monitoring, remaining life calculations, and turnaround inspection planning.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong technical knowledge of fixed equipment inspection, damage mechanisms, inspection methods, repair requirements, and applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise technical reports and communicate inspection results to stakeholders outside the inspection function.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Reliability, Inspection, Turnaround, and Technical Services personnel.
  • Self-motivated with strong ownership, prioritization, critical thinking, teamwork, and technical/professional knowledge.
  • Ability to lead or facilitate meetings and communicate recommendations clearly across multiple levels of the organization.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed inside and outside, in differing climatic conditions, and around noises, heat, heights and equipment associated with working in and around an oil refinery.
  • Must be able to perform work at ground level and at heights on concrete, metal grating, gravel, asphalt, and piping surfaces, while climbing and working in confined spaces.
  • Able to wear all personal protective equipment (P.P.E.)
