Job description

Position Summary:
The Saw Operator is responsible for accurately cutting structural steel and miscellaneous metal products according to shop drawings, cut lists, and production schedules. This position operates manual and CNC saw equipment to prepare material for fabrication while ensuring quality, efficiency, and safety standards are consistently met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate manual and CNC band saws, cold saws, and other cutting equipment to process structural steel and miscellaneous metal products.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, cut lists, work orders, and production schedules.
  • Measure, mark, and cut steel materials to specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • Verify material type, size, quantity, and heat numbers (when applicable) prior to cutting.
  • Upload, verify, and run cutting programs using the Bend-Tech Dragon CNC operating system.
  • Perform basic computer functions to access, upload, and manage production files.
  • Inspect cut materials for dimensional accuracy and quality before releasing them to fabrication.
  • Properly identify, label, and stage cut materials for downstream fabrication processes.
  • Load, unload, and move materials using forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance, including blade changes and routine cleaning.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, material shortages, or quality concerns to supervision.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Assist other production departments as needed to meet manufacturing schedules.
  • Follow all company safety policies, quality standards, and operating procedures.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience operating industrial saws in a structural steel fabrication or manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure and perform mathematical calculations involving fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, cut lists, and work orders.
  • Basic knowledge of structural steel products, including wide flange beams, channels, angles, tubing, pipe, plate, and bar stock.
  • Basic computer proficiency required, including the ability to upload and manage production files in the Bend-Tech Dragon CNC operating system.
  • Ability to learn CNC-controlled cutting equipment and related software.
  • Experience operating forklifts and overhead cranes preferred or the ability to become certified.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.

Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds; heavier materials are moved using lifting equipment.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach throughout an 8- to 10-hour shift.
  • Work in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, sparks, and moving machinery.
  • Ability to safely wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed boots.

Employment Requirements:
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to safely operate or become certified to operate forklifts and overhead cranes.
