Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Engineer/Principal Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer. This position is located in Huntsville , AL. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.
What You'll Get To Do:
  • Collaborate with business leaders and functional teams to support the continuous improvement of safety culture, awareness, and accountability across EHS&S programs.
  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs, procedures, and training materials in a growing and evolving operation.
  • Assist in building foundational EHS documentation, including written programs, work instructions, Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), Procedure Hazard Analyses (PHA), and training content, aligned with regulatory requirements and company standards.
  • Participate in the roll-out of new EHS processes and tools as the program matures, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
  • Support day-to-day EHS activities including incident reporting and investigations, safety observations, ergonomic assessments, inspections, corrective action tracking, and employee engagement efforts.
  • Work under the guidance of senior EHS staff to gain practical experience in regulatory compliance, hazard identification, and risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn, take initiative, and grow professionally in a developing EHS environment.
  • Interact with key internal and external customers and partners on a daily basis regarding EHS safety topics.
  • Work with or lead a small team of EHS engineers in defining, implementing and verifying compliance to NGC and Program safety requirements and ensure the inherent risks are mitigated.
  • Analyze Integration and Test processes to demonstrate hazards are mitigated and controlled for both safety and mission success, whether at the various operations sites or at our facilities in Roy, UT and Huntsville AL.
  • Reviews product designs, facility change requests, process changes associated with support equipment and facilities, and provide safety requirements. Independently analyzes and recommends safety criteria in procedures to control or eliminate hazards.

This position's standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:
  • EHS Engineer: Bachelor of Science degree in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental science, or a related field, with a minimum of 2 years of experience in an EHS role; or a Master of Science degree in the same disciplines with 0 years of relevant experience. 4 additional years may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • EHS Principal Engineer: Bachelor of Science degree in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, environmental science, or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in an EHS role; or a Master of Science degree in the same discipline with 3 years of relevant experience; or a PhD in the same discipline with 1 year of experience. 4 additional years may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Must possess an active U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance at the time of application, current and within scope, with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable time frame, as determined by business requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as business needs require.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Project.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Early career EHS experience, internship, co-op, or coursework exposure in a general industry, laboratory, R&D, or manufacturing-adjacent environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees and leaders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to perform assigned job duties with general direction and supervision, and to apply foundational safety principles to support problem-solving and risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze issues and seek information from multiple sources, showing curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn.
  • Exposure to EHS activities such as inspections, safety observations, PPE assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), or incident investigations.
  • Interest in supporting EHS program development, including procedures, training materials, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Exposure to environmental inspections, record keeping, or reporting activities under federal, state, or local environmental regulations
  • Experience reviewing and approving CAPEX requests, procedure documents and work instructions to ensure hazard mitigation controls and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience using a safety management system like Cority for data input and processing.

Primary Level Salary Range: $79,600.00 - $119,400.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $148,300.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
