Job Description:
Orbital is seeking a Substation Civil / Structural Engineering Manager to provide technical support and direction for our Substation Design Team. This REMOTE WORK position which requires demonstrated leadership. engineering and design competency, in a utility or consulting environment for Electric Substation Projects with voltages up to 500 kV. The position requires excellent communication, leadership and client relation skills. Candidates with a PE or SE license are required.
Responsible for technical leadership and oversight of substation civil and structural engineering and consulting services for clients across the US. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small equipment upgrades to large projects in transmission and distribution substations. This position provides leadership and mentorship to other team members and contributes to the technical development of the group as well as the quality of our deliverables. May serve as project lead or independent reviewer for projects assigned.
Essential Functions
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates activities of team personnel to deliver projects on time and on budget while accomplishing the goals and objectives of the projects.
  • Directs and/or provides technical leadership to team for engineering design and construction functions within assigned projects
  • Utilizes thorough understanding of Industry Standards, Client Standards, State or Local Municipal Guidelines, and/or other applicable guidelines to manage team through engineering designs.
  • Manages team productivity and ensures projects are closed out and invoiced accordingly.
  • Supports leadership team with client onboarding, contract negotiations, and extended relationship development to grow Orbital business.
  • Schedules work according to contractual agreements and assigns team personnel to appropriately meet agreement terms.
  • Responsible for development of customer proposals, including detailed technical scope, schedule, budget, and resource management.
  • Regularly interfaces directly with clients or contractors to ensure department projects are executed in alignment with scope.
  • Communicate potential strategic initiatives or team risks to internal management team.
  • Regularly works with internal stakeholders to ensure team has necessary resources to remain productive and effective.
  • Provides personnel orientation/training, mentorship, coaching, and disciplinary action.
  • Completes quality assurance practices on team deliverables to ensure highest quality product possible.
  • Conducts performance evaluations for department team members.

  • Substation Civil/Structural Design including foundations, structural steel, plans, sections, details, and bills of material.
  • Act as project lead or independent reviewer for projects assigned.
  • Provide technical support for clients and support regional business development initiatives as a technical resource under the direction of the Director.
  • Lead and mentor teams of engineers and designers and assume responsibility for their success on projects.
  • Work in a project team environment with other engineers and designers involved in detailed electrical design and project management of utility substation projects.
  • Participate in project conceptualization, work planning, and project execution.
  • Lead in the execution of engineering activities.
  • Calculations for studies and reports and preparation of equipment and installation specifications.
  • Coordination of design activities with other disciplines and groups.
  • Develop and improve processes, tools and technology within the organization.
  • Provide leadership, training and mentoring to other engineers and team members.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or external partners.
  • Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
  • Conduct field visits for site walkdowns, constructability reviews, construction support, and other site meetings as needed.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives.
  • Work with Project Management team to develop project plans and provide project updates.
  • May occasionally enter energized extra-high voltage substations up to 765kV and will need to coordinate with appropriate utility personnel throughout fielding activities within this location.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from accredited college or university, or a related field with equivalent experience.
  • Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in financial analysis and departmental budget management experience, including financial reporting and department auditing is preferred.
  • Proficiency with relevant codes and standards.
  • Experience with structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and/or foundation design.
  • Working knowledge of STAAD or RISA analytical software or equivalent
  • Experience in the Electric Utilities or Power Generation industries is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize multiple complex assignments and competing priorities to produce accurate products on time.
  • Ability to collaborate in cross-functional work teams.
  • The successful candidate must have exceptional analytical and decision-making skills, and a successful record of positive interactions with clients.
  • Ability to lead staff, delegate assignments and drive positive results.
  • Experience in creating and reviewing substation design drawings.
  • Proficient with current software applications used to perform substation design work.
  • Ability to successfully work with remotely located team members.
  • This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.

Location Note:
This is a remote position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate's location.
Salary Range:
$170,000-210,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
