Job Description:
Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Lead Track Inspector to work on our Honolulu Rail Project. As the successful candidate your ideas for continuous improvement and creativity are welcome. The position is based in Pearl City, HI.
Accountabilities:
  • Plan and implement a program of periodic inspections to provide optimum coverage of the railroad track in accordance with the track maintenance and inspection standards, state regulations, and FRA Track Safety Standards.
  • Perform walking railroad track structure inspection for compliance with railroad and project standards and federal/state regulations.
  • Perform walking inspection for 3rd rail and report any problems and best means of correction.
  • During the track inspection, be able to notice physical defects of on-track signaling equipment and on-track telecommunication equipment and report to the appropriate department.
  • Detect deviations from standards, identify areas requiring repair or maintenance, determine the seriousness of the problems and communicate with the Track Manager to implement remedial action on defects, speed restrictions, and pending repair.
  • Repair or direct crews to repair or replace track-structure defects.
  • Perform special inspections of the track structure in times of severe weather or other events that may damage the railroad.
  • Produce accurate and detailed inspection reports.
  • Provide clear and concise written and verbal communication of track conditions.
  • Know, apply and enforce applicable rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Coordinate operation of a track geometry test cart and use the information to produced, detect, locate, and evaluate deviations in cross-level, gage, and track profile. Perform on-ground inspections where defects are indicated to determine the seriousness of the problems and the best means of correction.
  • Coordinate operation of ultrasonic test cart and use the information produced, detect, locate, and evaluate deviations. Perform on-ground inspections where defects are indicated to determine the seriousness of the problems and the best means of correction.
  • Determine the need for and conduct safety meetings and on-the-job training for other track employees regarding proper and safe inspection and maintenance procedures.
  • Operate or direct crews on the operation of rerailing equipment.
  • Perform, either individually, or as a member or leader of a team, investigations of train accidents and or derailment.
  • Determines probable cause of accident or incident and whether any Federal regulations were violated.
  • Comfortable with sharing knowledge of track inspections and standards with other track employees.
  • Perform other tasks necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the rail transit system.
  • Manage other tasks and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Build and maintain effective internal and external customer relationships.
  • The role requires flexibility and efficiency which require shift rotation, working on weekends and holidays, which is typical of major infrastructure projects, and operational rail transit systems.

Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a railroad track inspector, maintenance of way (MOW) Foreman, or MOW Supervisor.
  • Knowledge of railroad track system construction, maintenance, testing, and inspection techniques.
  • Safety criteria for track structure and engineering.
  • Knowledgeable of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) track safety standards
  • Experience in track inspection (FRA or non-FRA) to help identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement.

Education:
  • High school diploma in technical area required
  • Associate's degree in construction/business management, or equivalent work experience, preferred.

Languages:
  • English Proficiency

The salary range for this position is $104,700 to $157,000 per year. Final pay is determined by the candidate's experience, skillset and ability level, internal equity and location.
