Job description

Pension Coordinator (Troy, MI)
Summary - Calculates retirement benefit estimates, processes applications, communicates with members, reports to Board of Trustees, balances monthly ledger, and processes pension checks. Performs customer service functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to
  • Determine eligibility for and calculate monthly benefits of participants based upon a thorough understanding of complex Plan provisions.
  • Approve or deny DB & DC applications based upon Plan Provisions and applicant information; process denial letters, appeals and final denials letters.
  • Data entry of new retiree information into proprietary software program; coordinate with Mass Mutual to issue payout and hardship checks; set up and maintain paper files for new retirees and payouts.
  • Communicate clearly with participants, both verbally and in writing.
  • Prepare meeting reports for the Board of Trustees.
  • Balance monthly ledger, including YTD figures; process monthly and manual pension checks in coordination with Troy Operations Department.
  • Review monthly and yearly exception reports, including 1099r processing in January, Plan Year End processing for DB pension, including the approval of participant annual benefit statements.
  • Maintain changes in census data, marital status, benefit status and monthly DB amounts for retirees in PC maintenance.
  • Create and maintain benefit summaries for use by fellow coordinators.
  • Create and maintain fund-specific procedural manuals.
  • Follow established procedures in a thorough and consistent manner.
  • Able to record and reference subjects covered during training, leading to the ability to work independently with minimal assistance and supervision.
  • Route Divorce Decrees and QDRO's to the Eligibility Department and the Fund Attorney; process QDROs as required.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job.

Education and/or Experience - High School diploma or GED and some college and/or job-related experience. Excellent customer service skills are a must.
Language Skills - Ability to comprehend written materials such as plan documents and legal correspondence. Communicate professionally, tactfully and clearly with participants, fellow employees and other professionals.
Preferred Qualification - Fluent in Spanish.
Mathematical Skills - Ability to apply concepts of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and algebra. Must be able to understand and apply knowledge of decimals, fractions, and percentages.
Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions. Ability to assess and analyze production results for accuracy and efficiency.
Computer Skills - Intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook are essential.
Work Schedule - Full time. Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm. Required in office (No at-home days).
