Job description

Salary: $40 - $48/hr DOE

Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the clinical oversight, coordination, and day-to-day functioning of nursing services at The Annex, which provides comprehensive mental health treatment across multiple levels of care, including weekends. This role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality nursing care; compliance with all applicable health, safety, and regulatory requirements; and effective integration of medical and psychiatric services within the interdisciplinary treatment team.

While this position does not function as a traditional personnel manager, the RN serves as the primary clinical leader for nursing services and maintains accountability for nursing standards, medication safety, infection control, and nursing-related clinical processes. The RN plays a critical role in promoting a culture of safety, collaboration, and clinical excellence.

Functional Oversight Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical guidance and coordination for Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and any unlicensed medical support staff (e.g., CNAs or Medical Assistants, if applicable), consistent with scope-of-practice regulations.
  • Participates in hiring input, onboarding support, scheduling coordination, performance feedback, and clinical coaching for nursing staff in collaboration with leadership.
  • Maintains oversight of nursing workflows including medication management, infection control practices, and clinical documentation standards.
  • Facilitates nursing huddles or meetings and participates in leadership, safety, and quality-improvement initiatives.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and maintains nursing policies and procedures aligned with organizational standards, Texas regulations, and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Oversees all aspects of medication administration processes, including storage, reconciliation, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Conducts routine audits of Medication Administration Records (MARs) for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Monitors adherence to infection control protocols, required health screenings, and regulatory safety standards.
  • Collaborates closely with the Clinical Director and Executive Director to ensure effective integration of nursing care within treatment planning and clinical programming.
  • Provides ongoing clinical education, competency validation, and skills development for nursing and medical support staff.
  • Coordinates nursing schedules to support appropriate clinical coverage across all program hours.
  • Leads participation in incident reporting, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action planning related to medical or nursing events.
  • Serves as a primary liaison with external medical providers, pharmacies, and ancillary healthcare partners as appropriate.
  • Participates in medical components of client admissions and ongoing assessments when indicated.
  • Maintains accurate nursing documentation and ensures EMR records meet all regulatory and accreditation standards.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of nursing best practices within behavioral health and psychotropic medication management.
  • Ability to provide clinical leadership, mentorship, and professional guidance without formal managerial authority.
  • Sound clinical judgment and effective decision-making in crisis or high-acuity situations.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interdisciplinary coordination skills.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and regulatory documentation requirements.
  • Comprehensive understanding of infection control, medication regulations, and healthcare safety standards.
  • Demonstrated cultural humility and commitment to ethical, client-centered care.

Education and Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.
  • Current, active Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
  • Minimum of 35 years of nursing experience in behavioral health or psychiatric treatment settings.
  • Prior experience providing clinical leadership, charge-nurse responsibilities, or program coordination strongly preferred.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification required.
  • Valid Texas drivers license required.
