What is a full time precision grinding machinist?

Full Time Precision Grinding Machinists are skilled workers who operate grinding machines to shape and finish metal or other materials to exact specifications. Their main responsibility is to achieve high precision and tight tolerances on components, often for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing. They read blueprints, set up grinders, measure workpieces, and ensure that finished products meet quality standards. Working full time means they are employed for a standard workweek, typically 40 hours or more, and may work in shifts depending on the employer. Attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and experience with precision measuring tools are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time precision grinding machinist?

To thrive as a Full Time Precision Grinding Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, experience with precision measurement, and a background in machining or manufacturing, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, CNC machines, and the ability to read blueprints and use micrometers and calipers are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to quality are critical soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate part production, minimize errors, and maintain high standards in demanding manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by full time precision grinding machinists, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Full Time Precision Grinding Machinists often encounter challenges such as maintaining tight tolerances, minimizing material waste, and ensuring machine calibration remains accurate throughout production. These challenges can be addressed by performing regular equipment maintenance, carefully monitoring workpiece measurements, and collaborating closely with quality control teams to catch deviations early. Staying updated on best practices and embracing continuous improvement initiatives can also help machinists effectively manage these demands and contribute to a high-quality manufacturing process.

What is the difference between Full Time Precision Grinding Machinist vs CNC Machinist?

Pinewood Tool is a family owned, high-precision job shop, and we're hiring a Precision Grinder to join our first shift. You'll handle surface and OD grinding on tooling and components for short-run, tight-tolerance work where flatness, parallelism, concentricity, and finish all need to be right the first time.
This is a hands-on role for someone who takes pride in reading a print, picking the right wheel, dressing it well, and bringing parts in to spec.
What you'll do

  • Surface (flat) grinding to hold flatness and parallelism
  • OD grinding to hold concentricity and runout
  • Fine surface-finish control to print specification
  • Work to Pinewood's capability of holding tolerances to .0001″
  • Set up your own jobs, select and dress wheels, and perform in-process inspection
  • Machine from blueprints, applying GD&T
  • Take ownership of your work and stand behind the result
What we're looking for

  • 10+ years of precision grinding experience in a toolroom or short-run job shop
  • Hands-on experience with precision hand grinders, spin fixtures and wet grinders
  • Demonstrated ability to hold tight tolerances on flatness, parallelism, concentricity, and runout
  • Strong wheel selection and dressing skills across materials and finishes
  • Solid blueprint reading and applied GD&T knowledge
  • Comfortable with standard toolroom metrology — micrometers, indicators, height gauges, surface plates, surface-finish testers
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Detail-oriented, dependable, and team-minded — a fit for our culture of ownership, attention to detail, continuous improvement, and teamwork
The shop and the schedule

  • First shift, 8-hour days, full-time, in person
  • Clean, air-conditioned facility
  • Small-team environment where your work is visible and valued
  • Salary is based on experience
