Full Time Pavement Engineering information

What is full time pavement engineering?

Full time pavement engineering is a professional role focused on the design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of roadways, runways, and other paved surfaces. Pavement engineers evaluate materials, traffic patterns, and environmental factors to ensure durable and cost-effective pavement structures. Working full time in this field typically involves project management, site inspections, data analysis, and collaboration with civil engineering teams to improve transportation infrastructure. These engineers often work for government agencies, consulting firms, or construction companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time pavement engineer?

To thrive as a Full-Time Pavement Engineer, you typically need a degree in civil engineering, a solid understanding of pavement materials and design, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with pavement design software (such as AASHTOware), CAD tools, and materials testing equipment is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals collaborate on project teams and address client needs. These competencies ensure the delivery of durable, cost-effective pavement solutions and successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by full time pavement engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Full-time pavement engineers often encounter challenges such as managing projects with tight deadlines, coordinating with multiple stakeholders (including contractors, government agencies, and clients), and adapting to unexpected site conditions or weather impacts. These challenges can be addressed through effective project planning, clear communication, and flexibility in problem-solving. Additionally, staying updated with the latest materials technology and design standards helps engineers provide durable, cost-effective solutions while meeting client and regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Full Time Pavement Engineering vs Civil Engineering?

Work Setting: Full-Time | Collaborative Aviation & Civil Infrastructure Consulting Environment
Base Salary: $82,000–$105,000 annually (DOE)
Recruited Exclusively By: Luxus Group Recruiting

Position Overview

This is a strong opportunity for a motivated Civil Engineer with approximately 3–5 years of experience to join American Infrastructure Development, Inc.'s growing Tampa team.

In this role, you will contribute to highly visible aviation, airport, and civil infrastructure projects throughout Florida, the United States, and the Caribbean. Your responsibilities will span civil design, technical documentation, permitting, project coordination, field investigations, and construction-phase support for both airside and landside infrastructure improvements.

This position is ideal for an engineer who wants more than a narrowly defined production role. AID is looking for a self-starter who takes ownership, communicates proactively, anticipates project needs, and wants to continue developing technically and professionally.

The strongest candidate will be interested in building specialized aviation and airport engineering expertise while gaining broader exposure to the complete project lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities

  • Prepare civil engineering designs, calculations, plans, and technical documentation
  • Use Autodesk Civil 3D to develop surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, grading plans, utility layouts, and construction documents
  • Support the design of airport runways, taxiways, aircraft aprons, access roads, parking areas, and associated infrastructure
  • Assist with grading, drainage, stormwater, earthwork, erosion-control, and utility design
  • Prepare civil construction plan sets, technical specifications, quantity calculations, and construction cost estimates
  • Interpret surveys, design criteria, technical specifications, and construction documents
  • Conduct engineering research and apply applicable design standards, codes, and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate civil design requirements with architects, aviation planners, engineers, surveyors, contractors, and airport representatives
  • Support airport and civil infrastructure projects through planning, design, permitting, bidding, and construction
  • Assist with FAA, FDOT, environmental, municipal, county, and other applicable permitting requirements
  • Support agency coordination and respond to permitting comments as required
  • Participate in site visits, field investigations, preconstruction meetings, and construction observations
  • Review shop drawings, contractor submittals, product data, requests for information, and contractor questions
  • Assist project managers with project schedules, budgets, quality control, and client deliverables
  • Identify potential design conflicts and recommend practical engineering solutions
  • Maintain organized project files and accurate technical documentation
  • Communicate project progress, challenges, priorities, and potential issues clearly to the project team
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks and follow them through to completion
  • Support multiple projects while managing deadlines and changing priorities
  • Participate in AID's formal quality-assurance and quality-control process
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams throughout the project lifecycle

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • Experience: Approximately 3–5 years of relevant civil engineering or design experience
  • Software: Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D
  • Civil Design: Experience producing civil construction plans and technical design documents
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of grading, drainage, stormwater, utilities, pavement, site development, or related civil engineering disciplines
  • Construction Documents: Ability to interpret surveys, design criteria, technical specifications, and construction documents
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Organization: Strong organizational and time-management abilities
  • Collaboration: Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary project team
  • Field Requirements: Willingness to visit project sites and travel occasionally when required
  • Driver's License: Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT: Engineer Intern or Engineer-in-Training certification
  • Licensure: Progress toward obtaining a Florida Professional Engineer license
  • Aviation Experience: Previous aviation or airport engineering experience
  • Airfield Design: Experience with runway, taxiway, aircraft apron, or airfield pavement projects
  • FAA Knowledge: Knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars and airport design standards
  • Florida Experience: Familiarity with FDOT standards and Florida permitting requirements
  • Additional Software: Experience with AutoCAD, Storm and Sanitary Analysis, Hydraflow, ICPR, AutoTURN, Bluebeam, or similar engineering software
