The Compressor Technician maintains and operates natural gas reciprocating compressors, natural gas turbine compressors to ensure the continuous flow of natural gas to customers.

This position is responsible for compressor facilities to ensure they are operating in compliance with DOT regulations and available 24/7 to meet system pressure and flow requirements. The incumbent maintains good communication with Gas Control, Measurement and Engineering to help address operational needs and provide assistance and support to Gas Control on a daily basis, ensuring safe, accurate and uninterrupted flow of natural gas through transmission and distribution systems.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Perform routine maintenance and repair as well as emergency troubleshooting and repair on compressors, coolant systems, lube oil systems, valves and actuators, emergency power systems, emergency shutdown systems, safety systems and station and unit control systems.

  • Work with other groups within PNG to maintain standard procedures and troubleshoot problems.

  • Develop and maintain compressor site operating procedures manual, reports, permits and logs.

  • Assure compliance with all applicable regulations (DOT, OSHA, EPA, etc.)

  • Act as liaison with contractors involved with compressor site activities.

  • Work closely with the engineering department in the identification of problems, implementing changes, and project oversight.

  • Perform fuel and exhaust sampling, disposal of oil and oil waste absorbents, disposal of coolant, and prevent hazardous waste generation as required.

  • Order and keep track of necessary parts and supply inventories at compressor sites.

  • Position may require maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of PLC's and electronic control systems and devices.

  • Oversee contractors during construction and/or repair of compressor stations.

  • Manually operate compressors during testing and real time operation.

  • Oversee and/or support compressor/ engine/ facility overhauls.

  • Identify, report and correct safety and environmental concerns.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned and required.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED

Desired Qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Experience in troubleshooting, operating and maintaining compression equipment

  • Time management skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Good oral and written communication to interact with appropriate personnel

  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel

  • Experience with Industrial/ Stationary Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines

  • Previous natural gas industry experience

  • Previous training/ job experience with PLC's

  • Previous training/ experience with electronics/electrical equipment and instrumentation

  • Previous field service experience

Working Conditions

  • Onsite Mobility Classification - Work will be performed at a company facility.

  • Working conditions include exposure to extreme heat and/or cold temperatures, high noise levels, and enclosed spaces

  • Perform work while bending, stooping, squatting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds

  • Good visual acuity and hearing.

  • Carrying and lifting items sometimes weighing up to 100 lbs.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, nights, or holidays

  • Frequent travel within PNG service territory

  • On-call responsibilities
