What does it mean to be a full time mom?

A full time mom, often called a stay-at-home mom, is a parent who dedicates her time primarily to caring for her children and managing the household instead of working outside the home. This role involves a wide range of responsibilities, including nurturing, teaching, organizing schedules, and maintaining the home environment. Being a full time mom is a demanding job that requires multitasking, patience, and flexibility, and it plays a vital role in the well-being and development of the family.

What are some common challenges full time moms face when balancing household responsibilities and personal time?

Full-time moms often juggle a variety of tasks, from childcare and household management to scheduling family activities and sometimes even supporting remote learning. One of the main challenges is finding time for self-care and personal interests amidst these responsibilities. Establishing routines, seeking support from partners or community groups, and setting realistic expectations can help manage daily demands and reduce stress. Connecting with other parents or joining local support networks can also provide valuable advice and encouragement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time mom, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Mom, you need strong multitasking, time management, and problem-solving abilities, often built through hands-on experience and self-education. Familiarity with child development resources, household management tools (like scheduling apps), and basic first aid knowledge is beneficial. Patience, emotional intelligence, resilience, and effective communication are essential soft skills for fostering a positive family environment. These skills and qualities are vital for supporting children's growth, maintaining household harmony, and handling daily challenges effectively.

Job description

A warm, close-knit family in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is looking for an energetic, engaged, and loving nanny/family assistant to join their household. The family have an 8-month-old son and an almost 4-year-old daughter, who attends school full-time. Mom recently stepped away from her corporate career, while Dad works a demanding job and is typically home after bedtime.

The general schedule will be Monday through Friday, from 8/8:30am–6:30pm, with with flexibility for occasional longer days/evenings. Some mornings may start later depending on the family's schedule, while occasional evenings will be needed for date nights or events. The family travels several times a year, and they will guarantee the nanny's salary when they travel without her (at least 4 weeks of the year). The ability to travel with them on long weekends from time to time or the occasional family vacation is ideal.

The primary focus of this role will be caring for the 8 month-old, with occasional care of both children as needed. They are looking for someone who is comfortable tag-teaming with Mom, adapting to the family's schedule (with respectful notice provided), and becoming a trusted part of their household. Candidates should ideally be able to start between August 17 and the first week of September.

This is a collaborative household. Some days Mom may be around and working alongside the nanny; other days the nanny may have more independent responsibility for the children.

Childcare

  • Provide attentive, loving care for their 8-month-old son throughout the day
  • Plan and participate in age-appropriate activities, outings, classes, walks, and play
  • Support their daughter's before- and after-school routine as needed
  • Occasionally care for both children when Mom is out, has an event, or needs additional support
  • Help with occasional evening routines and bedtime
  • Be comfortable carrying and caring for a large, strong, active baby, including navigating a flight of stairs
  • Support the children's development and daily routines
  • Work closely with Mom to divide and conquer throughout the day

Family Assistant/Household Support

  • Keep the kitchen and common areas tidy throughout the day
  • Handle children's laundry
  • Keep kids' rooms, toys, closets, and play areas organized
  • Help keep track of and properly store the children's belongings
  • Unpack packages and put away groceries when appropriate
  • Wash and prepare produce
  • Prepare simple foods for the baby, such as steamed vegetables
  • Help with light household organization and tidying related to the children
  • Occasionally walk the family's gentle dog when not responsible for either of the children

The family have professional housekeepers twice a week, so deep cleaning is not expected.

Cooking is not a major responsibility, as Mom and Grandma enjoy cooking and generally have meals covered. However, someone who enjoys cooking is certainly a bonus.

The family are looking for someone who is:

  • Warm, loving, and genuinely enthusiastic about children
  • Highly attentive and engaged throughout the day
  • Energetic and physically capable of caring for a strong, active baby
  • Patient, calm, and emotionally attuned
  • Interested in child development and age-appropriate activities
  • Comfortable working with a bright child who has sensory sensitivities and can occasionally have challenging emotional moments
  • Proactive and able to anticipate what needs to be done
  • Tidy, organized, and naturally helpful
  • Comfortable working collaboratively with a parent rather than expecting to be the sole caregiver
  • Flexible and adaptable when the family's schedule changes
  • Comfortable around dogs
  • Open to occasional family travel
  • Reliable, communicative, and interested in building a long-term relationship with a family

Their daughter has sensory challenges, and while she has made tremendous progress with occupational therapy and is doing very well, the famiily value someone who understands that challenging behavior requires patience, empathy, and consistency. Someone gentle, understanding and calm would be a great fit.

  • Prior professional childcare/nanny experience
  • Experience caring for infants and young children
  • Strong references
  • Ability to safely care for and physically handle an active infant
  • Ability to work collaboratively with parents and adapt to a family-oriented household
  • Flexibility around occasional schedule changes and evening hours
  • Comfort working approximately 8:00/8:30 AM–6:30 PM on most weekdays
  • Comfort around dogs
  • Willingness to occasionally travel with the family is strongly preferred, though not required
  • Must be comfortable working around extended family, including grandparents who are regularly involved in the children's lives

The family are looking for someone who sees this as more than simply a job — rather, they are looking for someone who will take pride in being an important, trusted member of their family team.

  • $45+/hr (50 hours per week will incorporate 10 hours at overtime rate)
  • Metrocard reimbursement
  • Healthcare stipend
  • Occasional family travel opportunities
  • Long-term position with a warm, collaborative family
