What is full time mechanical engineering?

Full time mechanical engineering jobs involve designing, developing, testing, and improving mechanical systems and devices in industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy. Mechanical engineers working full time typically work 40 hours per week and may be involved in tasks like CAD modeling, product testing, project management, and collaborating with other engineers. These roles require a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles, as well as problem-solving and communication skills. Full time positions often offer benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and opportunities for professional growth.

What does a full time mechanical engineer do?

Full-time Mechanical Engineers often collaborate with electrical engineers, designers, and project managers to develop and improve mechanical systems or products. Typical projects might include designing mechanical components, prototyping, conducting simulations or analyses, and solving manufacturing challenges. They are frequently involved in team meetings to ensure seamless integration of mechanical solutions with other engineering disciplines, and their work often requires balancing technical requirements with project timelines and budgets. This collaborative environment not only broadens technical skills but also enhances communication and project management abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time mechanical engineer?

To thrive as a Full Time Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving, and design, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and often PE licensure are commonly required. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and attention to detail set top candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing effective solutions, ensuring safety and efficiency, and collaborating on complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Full Time Mechanical Engineering vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectFull Time Mechanical EngineeringMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, possibly PE licenseBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field, often with CAD certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, R&D labs, officesDesign studios, engineering offices, manufacturing facilities
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, aerospace, automotive, energy sectorsProduct design firms, automotive, aerospace, consumer goods

Full Time Mechanical Engineering roles typically involve a broad range of engineering tasks, including analysis, testing, and project management, while Mechanical Design Engineers focus primarily on creating and refining product designs using CAD tools. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often work within the same industries, but their daily responsibilities and focus areas differ.

Is it possible to get a full time mechanical engineering degree while working full-time?

Obtaining a full-time mechanical engineering degree while working full-time is possible through part-time or evening programs offered by many universities, which allow students to balance work and study. These programs typically require strong time management skills and may extend the duration of the degree but enable professionals to gain qualifications without leaving their jobs.

What other jobs can I do as a full time mechanical engineer?

Full-time mechanical engineers can pursue roles such as design engineer, manufacturing engineer, project engineer, quality engineer, or systems engineer. They often work in industries like automotive, aerospace, energy, or robotics, utilizing skills in CAD software, thermodynamics, and materials science. Certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) can also expand career opportunities.

Job description

Junior Controls Engineer

We're seeking a full-time controls engineer to join our expanding team and contribute to the design, programming, and management of automation projects in the pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries. LAPORTE is a consulting engineering firm which has been in business for 25 years. Today, the company has 25 offices across North America and Europe, and over 480 employees with a passion for engineering.

Join us for a competitive salary, compensatory PTO, comprehensive benefits, and a supportive work environment that emphasizes professional growth. We believe in a flexible working environment that values work-life balance while encouraging efficiency and creativity on a daily basis.

The Junior Controls Engineer will:

  • Support the design and implementation of automation projects, assisting in the development of specifications for control panels, networks, and software (primarily AllenBradley PLC/PACs and FactoryTalk View ME/SE HMI and SCADA).
  • Contribute to translating process or packaging applications into construction packages for control panel designs and electrical installation scopes. Typical documents may include equipment arrangement drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and control panel drawings.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and project team members to ensure successful project execution and timely delivery.
  • Assist with project lifecycle activities, including system design, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning under the guidance of more experienced engineers.
  • Participate in site surveys and provide handson support during installation and commissioning, focusing on learning control system deployment best practices.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant codes (UL508A, NEC) and standards as part of project work.
  • Gain exposure to a wide range of projects that will help build engineering, technical, and project coordination skills.
  • Expect travel based on specific project needs-typically accompanying senior engineers for initial site visits (1-3 days) and commissioning trips (1-4 weeks). Overall travel is anticipated to be 20-40%.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • 0-2 years of experience in control systems, manufacturing, automation, or a related engineering environment (internships and coop experience welcome).
  • Foundational understanding of automation concepts, instrumentation, and control system components.
  • Familiarity with control panel design, network basics, and control system programming is preferred.
  • Experience or coursework using AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Exposure to electrical engineering construction packages (e.g., singleline diagrams, panel schedules, wiring diagrams) is beneficial.
  • Willingness to perform field surveys of existing control installations and assist with preparing asbuilt documentation.
  • Interest in learning Rockwell Automation software-including Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000 for PLC programming and FactoryTalk View ME/SE for HMI or SCADA development.
