Job description

MWH is a leading water and wastewater treatment-focused general contractor in the US with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Fueled by the mission of Building a Better World, our teams are rapidly growing across the nation.
As a company committed to our team's well-being and growth, we offer a supportive work environment, opportunities for advancement, and the chance to contribute to a mission that shapes the future. Your expertise and ambition are valued here.
The work we do matters. The critical systems infrastructure we build changes lives, betters communities, and improves ecosystems. If you're passionate about this, we want to hear from you!
About the Role
MWH Constructors is seeking an experienced construction attorney to join our legal team as Associate General Counsel. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, this highly visible role will take a hands-on lead in managing construction disputes, claims, and litigation arising from MWH's complex water, wastewater, and heavy civil infrastructure projects across the United States.
The Associate General Counsel will work closely with executive leadership, project teams, and external partners to develop practical legal strategies, assess and mitigate risk, and protect the company's interests. This is an opportunity for an attorney with deep construction litigation experience to transition into an influential in-house role, gain direct exposure to the business, and make an immediate impact on some of the nation's most critical infrastructure projects.
This position is based at MWH's corporate headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado, and requires full-time onsite work.
Essential Functions
  • Manage construction claims, disputes, and litigation arising from MWH's water, wastewater, and heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Take a hands-on role in developing case strategy, evaluating risk, and driving matters toward practical, business-focused resolutions.
  • Manage day-to-day litigation activities, including discovery, document collection and review, witness preparation, legal research, and coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Draft and review pleadings, motions, briefs, mediation statements, settlement agreements, claim demands and responses, and other litigation-related documents.
  • Select, engage, and oversee outside counsel, including managing strategy, performance, budgets, and legal spend.
  • Partner directly with project teams and operational leadership to assess claims and disputes, advise on risk, and develop strategies that protect the company's legal and business interests.
  • Advise the General Counsel, executive leadership, and project management teams on litigation exposure, claims strategy, and other complex legal matters.
  • Provide practical legal counsel regarding construction contracts, project execution, commercial matters, risk management, and regulatory compliance, particularly as these issues relate to claims and disputes.
  • Draft, review, analyze, and negotiate construction and commercial agreements as needed, with an emphasis on clear, practical solutions that support business objectives.
  • Support corporate departments on legal and compliance matters and help ensure adherence to applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Develop a strong understanding of MWH's operations and projects to identify legal risks proactively and provide timely, solutions-oriented guidance.
  • Perform other legal responsibilities and strategic initiatives as assigned by the General Counsel.

Basic Qualification
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar and the ability to obtain any authorization necessary to practice in Colorado.
  • Minimum six years of relevant legal experience, with substantial hands-on experience managing construction claims, disputes, and litigation.
  • Experience representing clients in the construction, engineering, heavy civil, infrastructure, or related industries, either in private practice or an in-house legal environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop litigation and claims strategy, evaluate legal and commercial risk, manage discovery, draft substantive legal documents, and drive matters toward resolution.
  • Strong legal research, writing, negotiation, analytical, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to provide practical, business-focused legal advice to executive leadership, project teams, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to make timely decisions based on available facts, applicable law, business objectives, and risk considerations.
  • Self-directed and results-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple complex matters, establish priorities, and meet deadlines with limited oversight.
  • Collaborative and approachable working style, with the ability to build trusted relationships across legal, operational, and executive teams.
  • Willingness and ability to work full-time onsite at MWH's corporate headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active membership in good standing with the Colorado Bar.
  • Experience representing general contractors or construction managers in complex construction claims and disputes.
  • Experience with heavy civil, water, wastewater, public works, or other large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Significant hands-on experience managing litigation, arbitration, mediation, and other dispute-resolution proceedings, including direct responsibility for strategy and substantive legal work.
  • Experience handling claims involving delay, disruption, differing site conditions, design issues, change orders, payment disputes, defective work, or subcontractors.
  • Working knowledge of construction contracts, project delivery methods, risk allocation, insurance, surety and bonding matters, and contract administration.
  • Prior in-house experience or demonstrated ability to operate effectively as a practical, commercially minded business partner.

Compensation
  • The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $200,000 - $250,000 depending on experience.
