What are Full Time Grammar Editors?

Full Time Grammar Editors are professionals who review and correct written content to ensure it follows proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style guidelines. They typically work for publishing companies, media outlets, educational institutions, or businesses producing large volumes of written material. Their responsibilities include editing documents, collaborating with writers, and sometimes providing feedback or training on writing standards. Full time positions mean these editors work standard business hours and may handle a variety of documents daily. Their work helps maintain the clarity, professionalism, and accuracy of published materials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Grammar Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Grammar Editor, you need an excellent command of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, typically supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing tools such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style is usually expected. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback are important soft skills for this role. These skills ensure that written content is clear, accurate, and consistent, maintaining high editorial standards and client satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by Full Time Grammar Editors, and how can they be addressed?

Full Time Grammar Editors often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, managing a high volume of content, and ensuring consistency across various documents. Staying up-to-date with evolving language usage and style guides can also be demanding. To address these challenges, editors typically rely on well-organized workflows, effective communication with writers, and the use of editing tools or software to streamline the review process. Collaborating with other editors and participating in ongoing professional development can further enhance accuracy and efficiency.

Job description

Associate Editor - News

Hyperallergic is a leading online voice publishing contemporary perspectives on art, culture, and more. Founded in 2009 as a forum for playful, serious, and radical perspectives on art in society, Hyperallergic combines art world news coverage with insightful commentary to reach an influential audience of over one million readers a month.

Hyperallergic is seeking an Associate Editor to join our team in Brooklyn. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of newsroom experience and a track record of producing impactful stories on the visual culture beat.

As Associate Editor, you will be responsible for both editing and writing daily news, from breaking coverage to explainers tied to current events.

We're looking for a journalist with well-developed sources in the art world and a deep understanding of the industry. Knowledge of visual artists, museums and institutions, the art market, online culture, and the intersections between art and politics is required.

The candidate should be a quick and flexible thinker who is comfortable shifting gears at a moment's notice to respond to a fast-moving news cycle, producing 3-5 articles a day through a combination of editing and writing. A typical week involves a mix of strategizing daily coverage, assigning and editing filed stories, and writing news reports as needed.

You'll also be expected to bring ideas to the table, actively look for stories, and help cultivate Hyperallergic's growing roster of sources and writers.

We would prefer to hire an enthusiastic Hyperallergic reader who is already familiar with our News desk. Our newsroom covers everything from activism, protest art, labor movements, and museum controversies to art fairs, auctions, memes, and archaeological discoveries, just to name a few topics. We are looking for an editor who's just as excited about and comfortable toggling between these areas of coverage.

The Associate Editor will manage a team of staff writers and freelancers under the supervision of the Senior Editor and Editor-in-Chief.

This is a full-time position with benefits. Editors are required to work from our office in Brooklyn four days a week, with the option to work remotely on Fridays.

Responsibilities

  • Strategizing the day's coverage in collaboration with the Senior Editor and Editor-in-Chief
  • Commissioning and editing daily news stories, including breaking news, original reporting, explainers, and more, to produce up to 3-5 stories/day
  • In collaboration with the Senior Editor, helping manage a team of in-house staff reporters and freelance contributors
  • Writing daily news and other pieces as needed
  • Edit article drafts with an eye for grammar, syntax, word choice, spelling, and punctuation as well as structure and flow
  • Fact-check pieces and flag factual errors
  • Find appropriate images for each article and secure image rights/permissions
  • Stay on top of important developments in the arts and culture sector and help develop story ideas
  • Work with writers to select images for each article.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of newsroom experience as an editor or reporter
  • A network in the visual art world and the ability to cultivate new sources by responding to tips and attending events on behalf of Hyperallergic
  • An insatiable curiosity for the dynamics of the visual art world and its intersections with global and national politics, social justice movements, and power dynamics
  • Experience with or an interest in other forms of media, such as video and audio, is a plus.
  • Ability to work well on a team, complete tasks under tight deadlines, problem-solve, and communicate effectively with writers on difficult topics

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k with 3.5% match)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick, & Public Holidays)

Salary range: $70,000-$80,000/year (Depending on experience)
