The Position
The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy trucks and equipment and assist work crews with city construction, maintenance projects and solid waste collection.
Duties
Drives heavy trucks and operates a variety of equipment to include industrial broom, various tractors, forklift, tractor trailer, street sweeper, water truck, dump truck, boom truck, patch truck, tree trimmer, rear loader, side loader, front end loader, unloader, pay loader, gradall, excavator, stump cutter, chipper, pole saw, chain saw, tamping machines, air hammers, shovel, pick, or related equipment.
Performs pre-trip inspection to ensure safe operations of trucks and equipment per regulations; performs routine maintenance on trucks such as cleaning, checking tires, and maintaining fluid levels; performs minor repairs or reports malfunctions as appropriate; prepares trucks and equipment for daily assignments.
May oversee the work activities of crews; assists in training new employees.
Operates heavy trucks and equipment to collect and transport garbage, debris, or related material; loads/unloads transported materials; ensures loads are secure.
May mow right-of-ways, saw and cut concrete and asphalt, tamp and pack dirt, saw trees and limbs, or perform related tasks; may assist in pipe installation; may grade ditches.
May locate and dig up manholes; may remove debris from manholes and catch basins; may clean pumping stations; may unstop river boxes; may construct sewer structures.
Prepares production reports and vehicle maintenance reports; submits to supervisor.
Operates a two-way radio to provide information or respond to requests for service.
Provides assistance to other City crews as directed.
May flag traffic around work sites.

Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by applicable Vocational/Technical training; and two (2) years experience and/or training in the operation of heavy trucks and equipment required or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s). Sewer: Class III Wastewater Collection Systems Certification preferred.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discern colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures, and visual cues or signals.
