Job description

AWK Consulting Engineers, Inc. has an immediate need for a full-time Senior Geotechnical Engineering Professional at its headquarters location in Pittsburgh, PA and its branch office in Harrisburg, PA. Self-motivated individuals with 10-15 years of relevant work experience and strong academic background should submit a cover letter and resume to AWK, per the instructions below.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and analysis of various shallow and deep foundation systems for structures; including calculations to determine bearing resistance or load-carrying capacity of the foundations along with the estimation of foundation settlements under different subsurface conditions and structural loading combinations
  • Design and analysis of various permanent and temporary earth retention systems such as concrete gravity, soldier beam and lagging, sheet pile walls, etc.
  • Slope stability analysis utilizing computer programs such as GSTABL and SLIDE
  • Design and analysis of MSE walls and Reinforced Soil Slopes
  • Preparation and supervision of the final geotechnical engineering reports. This activity requires excellent verbal communication skills as well as writing capabilities
  • Direct and manage various types of projects in the government, industrial, and private sectors that will include highways, bridges, culverts, dams, tunnels, and public infrastructure improvements along with manufacturing facilities, tanks and towers and various commercial and residential developments
  • Planning and execution of geotechnical exploration and providing oversight of geotechnical investigations including directing drilling subcontractors
  • Direct, manage and supervise Junior Engineers with respect to field exploration, inspection and classifying soil and rock retrieved during drilling; prepare boring logs for various types of projects
  • Responsible for data collection utilizing various types of field instrumentation such as inclinometers, piezometers, and settlement monitoring devices
  • Computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, L-PILE, P-Y Wall, MathCAD, Slope Stability & Wave Equation Analysis Program (WEAP & GRLWEAP)
  • Prepare scopes of work and manhour estimates for project work
  • Co-design and manage multiple geotechnical engineering projects, concurrently
  • Co-coordinate and execute various projects with Project and Junior Engineers, including ongoing mentoring of junior staff
  • Work alongside project management teams to successfully monitor progress and implementation of intiatives
  • Perform other related duties as required
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
  • BS in Civil or Geological Engineering (or associated engineering discipline); MS preferred
  • 10-15 years of experience in geotechnical engineering
  • PE certification
  • Project experience with bridges, roadways, retaining walls, soil and rock slopes, embankments, buildings, and various methods of ground improvements
  • Must be able to manage and be in charge of multiple projects from the inception/proposal stage to project closure
  • Dependable drive and character, as demonstrated with a stable work history
  • Possess computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, Project Management Software; and a working knowledge of geotechnical/structural analysis design software
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Superior communication skills, including verbal, social, and writing skills; the ability to interface with a diverse range of colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders
