Bridges the communication gap between healthcare providers and patients with limited English proficiency, enabling clear, precise coveyance of healthcare services. Provides valuable cultural context for better understanding and accurately translates the healthcare environment's nuances, giving a comprehensive framework for received messages.


Job Description:


Essential Functions:

  • Transmits accurately and literally between languages to facilitate communication between healthcare providers and patient families, also translating patient-specific healthcare instructions as appropriate.
  • Clarifies non-literal translations and provides necessary cultural framing to prevent misunderstandings during healthcare interactions.
  • Clearly explains the role of a Medical Interpreter to both the patient and the patient's family and healthcare provider to ensure smooth cooperation.
  • Serves as an essential resource to healthcare providers in delivering culturally competent care and to patients and families regarding NCH's culture and practices.
  • Abides by the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics, maintaining confidentiality, demonstrating a non-judgmental attitude, respecting patient self-determination, disclosing conflicts of interest, and upholding professional boundaries.
  • Completes thorough documentation of provided interpreter services and performs additional duties such as coordinating with other agencies for patient and family services.
  • Regularly seeks professional development through continuing studies and training, and maintains adherence to organization policies and procedures.


Education Requirement:

  • Completed accredited medical interpreter training, required.
  • Formal interpreter training, required.
  • Two years of college education, preferred.


Certifications:

Valid National Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting CHI or CMI or certification within 12 months of hire, required.


Skills:

  • Bilingual. Fluency in foreign language and English, required.
  • Effective customer service, communication and interpersonal skill.


Experience:

  • Experience interpreting in a health or human service organization, required.
  • One year of experience in a health care organization or interpreting in a health care of social service organization, preferred.
