Job Description

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Texas A&M University-Victoria is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in English. We seek a student-centered teacher and active writer/scholar who is enthusiastic about teaching undergraduates in a small, supportive English program.

Required qualifications: A doctoral degree or MFA (by August 15, 2026) in English, creative writing, or a related field; demonstrated excellence in teaching; evidence of scholarly, creative, and and professional activities; and willingness to teach service courses offered by the English faculty as needed, including composition and professional writing. Other classes would be assigned in accordance with department needs and the new hire's teaching interests.

Preferred qualifications: We seek a candidate specializing in fiction. Additional experience in creative nonfiction, narrative genres, American literature, multi-ethnic literature, professional writing, or online teaching is welcome. Experience mentoring undergraduate writers and supporting first-generation students is especially welcomed.

Position summary: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in a small but vigorous English program, including fiction workshops, composition, and other courses aligned with program needs and the candidate's expertise. Depending on program needs and qualifications, the candidate may also have opportunities to teach literature courses and/or contribute to the MFA program. The candidate will hold regular office hours; provide student-centered instruction and support for undergraduate writers; participate in course and program development; maintain an active agenda of scholarly, creative, and/or professional activity; perform appropriate college and professional service; and work cooperatively with students, faculty, and staff.

The appointment is a nine-month position. The assigned teaching load for the academic year is 24 hours (4/4). The successful candidate will begin employment in Fall 2026.

Victoria, TX: Victoria, Texas, a historic city located in the heart of the Golden Crescent of South Texas, is perfectly situated for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities. Victoria's warm climate keeps parks and lakes alive with activity most of the year. Riverside Park's 565 acres feature a rose garden, fishing on the Guadalupe River, disc golf, and paddling the Victoria Paddling Trail. Lone Tree Creek Park features a 2,400-square-foot splash park for children. New lighted and paved trails offer opportunities for walking, running, biking and rollerblading. The Victoria Youth Sports Complex houses a basketball pavilion, tennis courts, five softball fields and seven baseball fields, as well as a 15,000-square-foot skate park. Nearby Goliad State Park, Lake Texana Park and Campground, and Coleto Creek Park offer a variety of beautiful scenery and outdoor activities. Goliad State Park boasts a replica and historic mission ruins. Victoria's golf courses include Riverside Golf Course, The Club at Colony Creek and Victoria Country Club. Victorians also enjoy a wide variety of cultural activities including world class symphony, museums, theater, ballet, opera, and touring Broadway productions as well as major sporting events and a variety of restaurants and shopping.
