Full Time Energy Modeling information

What is the difference between Full Time Energy Modeling vs Full Time Building Energy Analyst?

AspectFull Time Energy ModelingFull Time Building Energy Analyst
CredentialsOften requires certifications like LEED AP, CEM, or energy modeling software proficiencyTypically holds similar certifications, with additional focus on building systems and performance analysis
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based, using software tools for simulations and analysisOffice and site visits, analyzing building performance data
Industry UsageUsed in design, consulting, and sustainability projectsCommon in facility management, energy audits, and building operations

Full Time Energy Modeling focuses on creating detailed simulations of building energy performance, while Full Time Building Energy Analysts evaluate actual building data to optimize energy use. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in related environments, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

What are some common challenges faced in a full-time energy modeling role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in a full-time energy modeling role is ensuring the accuracy and reliability of simulation data, which often requires thorough validation and calibration with real-world building performance. Additionally, energy modelers frequently navigate evolving building codes and standards, which necessitates continuous learning and adaptation. Collaboration with architects, engineers, and project managers is essential to gather complete data and communicate findings effectively. Staying organized and detail-oriented, as well as proactively seeking feedback from team members, can help overcome these challenges and contribute to successful project outcomes.

What is a Full Time Energy Modeling job?

A Full Time Energy Modeling job involves using specialized software and analytical methods to simulate and evaluate the energy performance of buildings or industrial systems. Professionals in this role create detailed models that estimate energy consumption, identify opportunities for efficiency improvements, and ensure compliance with codes or green building standards. They often collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers to optimize energy use and support sustainable design. Full-time positions typically require strong analytical skills, knowledge of relevant modeling tools, and a background in engineering or a related field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Energy Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Energy Modeler, you need a solid background in building science, mechanical engineering, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree and experience with energy efficiency principles. Familiarity with technical tools such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, or IES VE, and certifications like LEED or ASHRAE are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in interpreting data and collaborating with project teams. These skills are vital for accurately modeling energy use, optimizing building performance, and ensuring successful project outcomes.

Job description

Position Overview

Harris Energy Solutions, LLC (HES) is a nationwide Energy Consulting Services firm. HES offers a full suite of consulting services, including Building Energy Modeling, Renewable Energy Consulting, Master Planning, Energy Audit, Building Commissioning, Measurement and Verification, and Building Retro-Commissioning. We pride ourselves on the work we perform and the services we provide. HES is hiring an Energy Engineer specializing in Energy Modeling to join our team.

The Energy Engineer (Energy Modeling) will perform whole-building energy simulations to support design decisions, code compliance, certification programs, and decarbonization planning. This role focuses on accurate, well-documented building energy models that translate design intent into actionable energy and cost insights.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Whole-Building Energy Modeling: Develop baseline and proposed energy models in eQUEST, OpenStudio/EnergyPlus, IES-VE, Trane TRACE 3D Plus, or Carrier HAP for new construction, major renovation, and retrofit projects.
  • Drawing and Specification Review: Review architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and envelope documents to identify model inputs, including geometry, constructions, occupancy, lighting, plug loads, HVAC systems, and operating schedules.
  • Code Compliance and Certification Modeling: Produce ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G performance-path models, IECC compliance models, and certification submissions for LEED EAp2/EAc1, ENERGY STAR, Passive House, and similar programs.
  • Support Local Decarbonization Compliance: Develop models supporting compliance with local laws and stretch codes (e.g., NYC Local Law 97, Title 24, Boston BERDO, Washington Clean Buildings Act).
  • Parametric and Design Optimization Studies: Run parametric analyses on envelope, HVAC systems, controls, and renewable energy options; quantify life-cycle cost and carbon impacts to support design decisions.
  • Calibrate Existing Building Models: Calibrate energy models against utility billing or interval data per ASHRAE Guideline 14 standards for retro-commissioning, deep retrofit, and ESPC projects.
  • Renewable Energy Modeling: Support photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal, and battery storage modeling using tools such as PVsyst, SAM, and integrated simulation tools.
  • Generate Technical Reports: Author energy modeling reports, narratives, and exhibits suitable for clients, design teams, certification reviewers, and authorities having jurisdiction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in engineering (Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical, or Facilities) or Building Science
  • 1-3 years of energy modeling experience, including at least one internship, co-op, or full-time role
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of: eQUEST, OpenStudio/EnergyPlus, IES-VE, Trane TRACE 3D Plus, or Carrier HAP
  • Working knowledge of ASHRAE 90.1 (especially Appendix G), ASHRAE 62.1, and applicable energy codes (IECC, Title 24, state stretch codes)
  • Understanding of HVAC system types, controls, building envelope, and renewable systems
  • Familiarity with LEED energy modeling submission requirements preferred
  • Strong Excel skills; experience with Python, Ruby, or scripting against modeling tools is a plus
  • Experience with large commercial and multi-family buildings preferred but not necessary
  • EIT, BEMP, CEM, or LEED AP BD+C credential preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Travel throughout the United States as required by project workload

Personal Qualifications

  • Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills
  • Passionate about mitigating climate change
  • Collaborative and a strong team player
  • Self-motivated with the ability to multitask and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Enthusiasm to learn and grow as a professional
