Job description

Job Title:   Technician 

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Shop Operations  

Employees Supervised: None 

FLSA Status:  Full-Time Non-Exempt  

Job Purpose 

The position of Mechanic for Exotics Racing generally serves as a high-performance engine technician, professionally responsible for keeping vehicles running as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Mechanics will typically work on maintaining high- performance vehicles.  Using computer diagnostic equipment, the Mechanic tests the cars to ensure they are operating correctly and identify potential problems; also works on high performance steering and suspension, drivelines, electrical and ignition systems. 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Maintains vehicle functionality by conducting inspections, repairing engine failures and drivetrain, repairing mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions, replacing parts, components and repairing body damage; 

  • Keeps equipment available for use by inspecting and testing vehicles, completing preventive maintenance such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, replacing filters, tire rotation and changes, wheel balancing; 

  • Verifies vehicle serviceability by conducting test drives, adjusting controls and systems; 

  • Complies with state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards; 

  • Maintains vehicle records by recording service and repairs; 

  • Keeps shop equipment functioning by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, calling for repairs; 

  • Contains costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options; 

  • Keeps supplies ready by reviewing inventory stock, placing orders, verifying receipt of inventory; 

  • Stays on top of industry trends and job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications; 

  • Seeks to meet organizational mission at an individual level through partnering with supervisory staff and communicating goals; 

  • Manage and secure confidential information; 

  • Regular and consistent attendance; 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge  

  • Thorough knowledge of the theory and complexities of automotive technology,  

  • Care and operation of internal combustion engines as well as electric hybrids, 

  • Current repair methods, materials and tools;  

  • Applicable state and federal requirements;  

  • All aspects of metal fabrication; 

  • Methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;  

  • Safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of electronic and mechanical equipment. 

  • Engineering and Technology Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services. 

  • Computers and Electronics Knowledge of computers and technology related to the high-performance vehicles operating in our Fleet, including but not limited to: circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming of this equipment. 

  • Public Safety and Security Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. 

Skills 

  • Equipment Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.  

  • Troubleshooting: Determining causes of operating errors and determining best approach to an efficient, long-term and safe repair. 

  • Quality Control Analysis: Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance. 

  • Equipment Selection: Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job. 

Abilities 

  • Perform basic diagnostic procedures on all vehicle systems; determine appropriate maintenance and repairs;  

  • Effectively use hand tools and automotive diagnostic equipment;  

  • Interpret manufacturers’ specifications; generate and keep government-mandated computer records and files;  

  • Layout, position and complete projects from blueprints, sketches and verbal instructions;  

  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations;  

  • Perform heavy physical labor;  

  • Ability to work from plans and specifications;  

  • Follow and give oral and written instructions;  

  • Maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.

The Work Environment 
May be exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable; may be exposed to hazardous equipment and/or hazardous conditions requiring the need to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hard hats; may require working in very hot or very cold temperatures; may require working under covered structure with roof but no walls; requires working outdoors exposed to all weather conditions. Performs physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials; uses hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things; performs repetitive physical activities or mental activities without stopping. Requires contact with others (face-to-face, by telephone or otherwise). Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the construction trades. Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards.

Qualifications  

Experience and Education: A Technician has earned at least a high school diploma or GED with additional course work through a technical trade school, community college or junior college to study the construction and operation of engines. An understanding of diagnostic testing equipment is critical.  Preferred four years as a journey-level mechanic in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting. 

Certifications 

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification: 

  • ASE certifications are widely recognized in the industry and cover different areas of automotive repair. The most relevant ones for this role include: 

  • A4: Suspension and Steering 

  • A5: Brakes 

  • A6: Electrical/Electronic Systems
