Overview
The Staff Data Engineer plays a pivotal role in managing the data strategy and architecture at Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits (SGWS). This position is responsible for building and maintaining the development, implementation, and support of advanced data systems and solutions that have a significant impact across the organization. The Staff Data Engineer designs and manages scalable data infrastructures to transform raw data into actionable insights, driving value creation, growth, and business results. This role requires a deep understanding of data engineering principles, advanced analytics, and machine learning techniques. In addition to collaborating and guiding architects, data analysts, and data scientists, the Staff Data Engineer takes ownership of complex projects, leads cross-functional initiatives, and mentors junior team members.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Build and maintenance of data management systems that combine core data sources into accessible structures.
  • Perform data conversions, imports, and exports of data within and between internal and external software systems.
  • Develop programs to extract, transform, and load data between data sources.
  • Create data transformation processes (ETL, SQL stored procedures, etc.) to support complex to moderately complex business systems and operational data flows.
  • Update data dictionary.
  • Maintain the quality of Metadata Repository by adding, modifying, and deleting data.
  • Design and implement processes to ensure data integrity and standards.
  • Recommend and implement data reliability, efficiency, and quality improvements.

Additional Primary Responsibilities
  • Ensure the collected data is within required quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot data analytic tools, systems, and software.
  • Identify and resolve production and/or development problems that relate to the use of the database management systems.
  • Resolve moderately complex conflicts between models and ensure data model consistency across SGWS (e.g., entity names, relationships, and definitions).
  • Develop and maintain a query library to support data requests.
  • Document and review models, solutions, and implementations (e.g., Data Mapping, Technical Specifications, Production Support, Data Dictionaries, Test Cases, etc.).
  • Create custom software components and analytics applications.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Typically, 6-9+ years of experience in data management disciplines (e.g., data integration, modeling, optimization) or areas relevant to data engineering tasks (e.g., data visualization, business intelligence).
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and facilitation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and executive leadership.
  • Strong experience in DevOps and Agile technology environments.
  • Proven ability to lead data engineering projects and initiatives.
