Job description

HERD MANAGER
Wright's Dairy Farm amp; Bakery | North Smithfield, RI
Full-Time | Exempt
| $70,000 - $80,000
Lead a Century of Dairy Excellence
At Wright's Dairy Farm amp; Bakery, we've been producing fresh, local dairy products since 1914. As a fourth-generation family farm, we're proud to care for over 130 Holstein cows while producing the milk used in our farm-fresh products enjoyed throughout Rhode Island.
We're looking for an experienced Herd Manager who is passionate about dairy cattle, enjoys leading people, and wants to make a lasting impact on a progressive, family-owned operation.
This is more than a herd management position, it's an opportunity to lead, develop a team, and help shape the future of one of New England's most recognized dairy farms.
What You'll Do

As Herd Manager, you'll oversee the daily health, productivity, and welfare of our dairy herd while leading the farm team and driving operational excellence.
Responsibilities include:
  • Lead all aspects of herd health, reproduction, and animal welfare
  • Partner with veterinarians, nutritionists, and leadership to maximize herd performance
  • Monitor milk quality and production metrics
  • Oversee breeding programs, maternity, calf care, and transition cows
  • Maintain accurate herd records and production data
  • Lead, coach, and develop the farm team
  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare, food safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Manage inventory of herd health supplies and medications
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity, and herd performance
  • Support seasonal field work and equipment operation as needed
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Animal Science, Dairy Management, Agriculture, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3-5+ years of progressive dairy herd management or farm leadership experience
  • Strong knowledge of herd health, reproduction, nutrition, and milk production
  • Proficiency in Artificial Insemination (AI)
  • Experience supervising and developing employees
  • Experience with herd management software and production records
  • Ability to operate tractors, skid steers, and agricultural equipment
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Dairy Science, or related field
  • Dairy Herd Management or Herd Health certifications
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
Why You'll Love Working Here
At Wright's, you'll join a team that genuinely cares about its animals, employees, and community.
We offer:
  • Competitive salary
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Employee discounts on our farm-fresh products
  • Professional development opportunities
  • A collaborative, family-oriented culture
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a growing dairy operation
Schedule

Farming isn't a 9-to-5 job—and our cows don't take weekends or holidays off.

This position requires flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and other hours as needed to support the health and well-being of the herd. Dairy operations run 365 days a year, and the Herd Manager plays a vital leadership role in ensuring exceptional animal care every day of the year.

Work Environment
This is a hands-on leadership position working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. The role requires working around livestock, agricultural equipment, and farm facilities while maintaining the highest standards of safety and animal care.
About Wright's Dairy Farm amp; Bakery
