Job description

High Point University invites applications for a 9-month, nontenure-track Assistant Professor of English. The position begins August 2026. All High Point University faculty at this rank teach a 3/3 load, maintain a robust research and/or creative publishing agenda, and enjoy professional development funding as well as service opportunities to make a significant impact on the institution's academic life. The HPU English Department comprises a collegial group of faculty representing Literature, Creative Writing, and Public and Professional Writing, who regularly teach general education courses as well as courses in their area of specialization.
The successful candidate will teach courses across our writing programs and will possess expertise and previous work experience in literary, creative, and/or professional publishing. Ideally, this will allow them to teach a range of courses, including creative writing, digital editing and publishing for professional publications and develop a vision for the public and professional writing minor. Candidates who have records of scholarship related to literary, creative, and/or professional publishing are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates should also demonstrate an understanding of GenAI's implications for writing, editing, and publishing as well as mindfulness and agility when orienting to its use instructionally.

Minimum Requirements: Terminal degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, Publishing Studies, or a closely related field in hand by August 2026.

After initial review, selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. At which point, candidates may also be asked for additional documents such as a teaching portfolio (which may include recent syllabi, assignments, and course evaluations) as well as a research and/or creative publishing plan.
