What does a full time connector design engineer do?

A Full Time Connector Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing electrical connectors used in various electronic systems and devices. They work closely with cross-functional teams to create connector solutions that meet mechanical, electrical, and environmental requirements. Their role includes drafting detailed technical drawings, selecting appropriate materials, conducting simulations and testing, and ensuring products comply with industry standards. This position often involves problem-solving, project management, and communication with suppliers and customers to deliver reliable connector products.

What are some typical challenges faced by full time connector design engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Full Time Connector Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing mechanical robustness with electrical performance, meeting strict industry standards, and addressing manufacturability concerns. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including manufacturing, quality assurance, and customers—helps ensure designs are both innovative and practical for production. Staying up-to-date with evolving materials and simulation tools can also aid in overcoming these hurdles and delivering reliable, cost-effective connector solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time connector design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Connector Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, experience with connector design principles, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and industry standards (like IPC or UL certifications) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and clients. These competencies ensure reliable, innovative connector solutions that meet technical specifications and industry requirements.

What is the difference between Full Time Connector Design Engineer vs Contract Connector Design Engineer?

AspectFull Time Connector Design EngineerContract Connector Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, relevant certificationsSame as full-time, often with additional contract-specific experience
Work EnvironmentPermanent employment, in-house design teamsTemporary or project-based, often remote or on-site
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, automotive, electronics companiesConsulting firms, contract agencies, project-based industries

Full Time Connector Design Engineers typically work as permanent staff within companies, focusing on ongoing product development. Contract Connector Design Engineers are hired for specific projects, offering flexibility but often with shorter-term commitments. Both roles require similar skills and credentials, but differ mainly in employment type and work setup.

Connector & Interconnect Design Engineer

Figure

San Jose, CA • On-site

$145K - $250K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 12 days ago

Job description

Figure is an AI robotics company developing autonomous general-purpose humanoid robots. The goal of the company is to ship humanoid robots with human level intelligence. Its robots are engineered to perform a variety of tasks in the home and commercial markets. Figure is headquartered in San Jose, CA.
We are looking for a hands-on Connector & Interconnect Design Engineer to own the full lifecycle of custom electrical interface development - from concept and CAD modeling to drawings, testing, and supplier coordination. This role sits at the intersection of mechanical and electrical engineering, and requires someone who can think in 3D, design for manufacturability, and validate to real-world performance requirements.
You will be the technical owner of connector and interface programs, working closely with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to bring novel interconnect solutions from whiteboard to production.
Responsibilities:
  • Own 3D CAD modeling and 2D detailed drawings for custom connectors, overmolds, and electromechanical interfaces
  • Design housings, contacts, strain reliefs, and sealing features with a focus on mechanical precision and DFM
  • Create complete manufacturing packages: GD&T drawings, tolerancing, material callouts, and assembly instructions
  • Perform connector power calculations: contact resistance, current derating, temperature rise, and mating force analysis
  • Collaborate with EE to ensure interfaces meet signal integrity, shielding, and power delivery requirements
  • Develop and execute validation test plans: mating cycles, pull-out force, vibration, thermal cycling, and environmental exposure
  • Define acceptance criteria, document results, and drive corrective actions
  • Manage custom connector programs end-to-end: RFQ, supplier selection, tooling milestones, and qualification
  • Support prototype builds, first article inspections, and bench-level troubleshooting
  • Maintain engineering documentation, BOMs, and revision history in PLM systems

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in connector design, electromechanical packaging, or interconnect engineering
  • Strong 3D CAD proficiency (CATIA, SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent) - you will be in CAD every day
  • Demonstrated experience designing custom components: housings, overmolds, contacts, or electromechanical assemblies
  • Ability to create complete, manufacturing-ready 2D drawings with proper GD&T
  • Solid understanding of connector electrical fundamentals: current rating, contact resistance, derating, and power dissipation
  • Experience developing validation test plans and executing qualification testing
  • Comfortable working with external suppliers and contract manufacturers across the full development cycle
  • Hands-on mindset - you prototype, test, and troubleshoot hardware yourself

Bonus Qualifications:
  • Experience with a wide variety of connector technologies and contact interface types
  • Background in robotics, defense, medical devices, aerospace, or other precision electromechanical systems
  • Familiarity with injection molding, insert molding, and overmold design for production
  • EVT/DVT build support experience in a hardware startup environment
  • Exposure to reliability engineering: FMEA, Weibull analysis, or accelerated life testing
  • Familiarity with PLM tools (Enovia, Windchill, Agile, or similar)

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $145,000 - $250,000 annually.
The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.
