The Hamline University Division of Arts seeks a collaborative musician-educator to join our faculty as a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music in an innovative curriculum that blends music production and performance. This position is designed for a versatile performer and technologist who is comfortable crossing stylistic borders and blending and bridging genres and traditions.
The successful candidate will join a dedicated cohort of faculty focused on a holistic approach to modern music-making. This position requires classroom and studio teaching in areas of history/culture, performance, digital music technologies, and directing an ensemble in their area of expertise. The successful candidate will have a performance specialty - vocal, strings, wood/brasswind, or piano - and experience with both live performance and making music in the box and in the studio.
Primary Responsibilities
- Classroom Teaching:The successful candidate will contribute their individual strengths and interests to teaching in the core curriculum of the Music Production Major. This may include teaching subjects in contemporary and traditional music history and theory, composition/song-writing, digital technology, and performance courses.
- Ensemble Direction: Direct/conduct one or more of the following ensembles: choir, orchestra, band, jazz band, modern or hybrid pop/acoustic/electronic orchestra.
- Software and Technology Instruction: Teach courses that integrate assignments using digital music technology (preferably Logic Pro) with practical instruction in gain staging, foundational audio engineering, and basic audio and MIDI editing and programming.
- Program Support:Participate in curricular development, assessment, recruitment and departmental service as an engaged member of the music faculty team.
- OPTIONAL Performance Instruction: Provide studio instruction in primary area (vocal, instrumental or composition), focusing on technical development, inclusive repertoire, and applications in traditional and contemporary performance settings.
Required Qualifications:
- Terminal Degree: A PhD, DMA or MFA in Music(Performance, Composition, Music Production, or other relevant specialty) from an accredited college or university or completed ABD by July 31, 2027 (Required at time of appointment)
- Performance: Active performer at the professional level
- Music Technology:Competent skills in DAWs (strong preference for Logic Pro) and a foundation in audio hardware (signal flow, interfaces, experience with microphone use as part of live performance and music recording.).
- Classroom Teaching Experience: A proven record of successful classroom teaching at the high school or collegiate level, minimum 5 years.
- Collaboration: A demonstrated ability to work effectively with a team, academic or professional, and contribute to a shared vision and mission.
- Community-oriented: Professional or pedagogical work connecting with diverse communities outside of academia.
- Ensemble Leadership:Experience building, maintaining and directing traditional or contemporary ensembles.
- Professional Portfolio: Evidence of commitment to ongoing creative activity as a performer, sound designer/composer, and/or producer.
- Interdisciplinary Interest: Experience working across genres, collaborations across disciplines, theater, digital media, creative writing, as well as subjects outside of the arts.
