About the role:

The SEM/EDS Technician supports the Materials Testing, Analysis, and Characterization Laboratory by operating scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) systems to collect and document microstructure, surface topography, and elemental composition data for a wide range of materials using established procedures and work instructions.

This role is based at a materials testing laboratory and is a full-time, on-site position. The SEM/EDS Technician works closely with scientists and technical staff in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be in our local office five days per week

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Operate SEM and EDS instrumentation to examine and characterize material samples in accordance with established laboratory protocols.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, including mounting, coating, polishing, and sectioning as required.
  • Acquire and process analytical data; record observations, measurements, and instrument settings; and produce clear data summaries and technical documentation using approved templates and formats.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of SEM/EDS equipment to ensure reliable performance and compliance with applicable safety and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate with laboratory staff and internal clients to clarify sample information, testing requests, and scheduling needs; communicate progress and raise risks or constraints to the appropriate lead.
  • Troubleshoot instrument and routine method issues within established guidelines; document issues and actions taken; coordinate with vendors or senior staff as needed; and assist with method updates, validation activities, and new applications under direction.

Required qualifications:

  • 4 years of experience with a high school diploma/degree/equivalent

Preferred qualifications:

  • Six (6)+ years of experience operating SEM/EDS equipment; or
  • Associate degree (A.S.) in materials science, physics, chemistry, life sciences, or a related field, plus four (4)+ years of experience in a test lab and/or microscopy function; or
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in materials science, physics, chemistry, life sciences, or a related field, with microscopy experience (e.g., coursework, lab work, internship, or co-op).
  • Experience with complementary test methods such as cross-sectioning, metallography, microhardness testing, tensile testing, FTIR, XRF, or other relevant analytical techniques.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to follow approved analysis workflows, recognize out-of-trend results, and escalate questions appropriately.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical documentation using approved templates and terminology.
  • Ability to work under general supervision, manage assigned workload, follow SOPs and work instructions, and collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety practices and quality standards (e.g., SOP adherence and documentation requirements).
