Job description

1st shift: 6:30AM-3PM

2nd shift: 3PM-11:30PM

Summary/Objective

The CNC Setup Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC and manual machinery (Lathes) to support efficient production. This role involves troubleshooting, optimizing setups and programs, and continuously improving machine processes to ensure quality and productivity. This role may report indirectly to a Production Lead, with a direct reporting relationship to the Production Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  1. Set up, operate, and perform advanced adjustments on CNC machinery, including Mazaks, and Nakamuras, ensuring equipment is calibrated to meet precise production requirements.

  2. Develop, prepare, optimize, and maintain CNC programs, part fixturing, tooling, and setup procedures to enhance production efficiency and quality.

  3. Troubleshoot and resolve complex CNC machine issues, using in-depth knowledge of machinery to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.

  4. Perform set-ups for CNC lathes in your assigned area to ensure efficient production processes and assist operators/tenders.

  5. Inspect parts during production using precision measurement tools, such as micrometers and calipers, to verify adherence to quality specifications.

  6. Perform first-piece inspections, complete all quality and production paperwork, and monitor in-process inspections conducted by tenders.

  7. Record production data and machine performance in ERP systems, ensuring accurate tracking of materials, adjustments, and output.

  8. Provide guidance and technical support to CNC Operators and Tenders, assisting with setups, troubleshooting, and operational challenges.

  9. Train operators/tenders on processes, procedures, and parts, ensuring they are equipped to meet on-time delivery and quality metrics.

  10. Identify, document, and implement continuous improvement techniques to reduce setup times, improve production rates, machining methods, quality, and safety.

  11. Work with additional Setup Technicians and the Engineering team to optimize machine performance, programs, and setups.

  12. Maintain documentation for process equipment, such as setup sheets and monitoring logs, to ensure accurate records and smooth operations.

  13. Oversee the scrap process for assigned facilities, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to established procedures.

  14. Assure daily preventative maintenance is performed on assigned equipment and assist the maintenance team in reducing downtime when necessary.

  15. Follow all safety protocols, ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean, organized workspace.

  16. Perform basic machine maintenance and assist with advanced maintenance tasks when needed.

  17. Support by floating between various CNC machines to ensure smooth operations and meet production demands.

  18. Any/all other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work involves frequent lifting of materials and product up to 50 pounds and seldom lifting to 75lbs. Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle and/or adjust equipment. Moderate reaching, pushing, pulling, gripping, and grasping. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to safety glasses, and steel toed work boots or shoes.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position at 40+ hours per week. Days and hours of work will be determined by management. Typical schedule is Monday through Friday eight (8) hours per day. Occasional overtime, evening and weekend work may be required to meet business demands.

Our current hiring pay range for this position is $25-$37.50. This hiring pay range is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and, in some instances, may include education, work experience, knowledge, skills and certifications.

In addition to this base pay, Rockford Ball Screw employees are eligible for a bonus. Depending on your position you may be categorized into different tiers in the quarterly or annual bonus plan. Currently, this position is classified as a Quarterly Bonus within the Individual Contributor tier.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Must be 18 years or older.

  2. High School Diploma/GED equivalent or significant relevant work experience.

  3. 5+ years of experience operating CNC machinery operating both single-axis and multi-axis machinery, as well as single-turret and multi-turret systems, including Mazaks, Doosans, INDEX, and Nakamuras.

  4. Capable of using measuring instruments, i.e. micrometer, calipers, gages, etc.

  5. Capable of using all required hand tools, i.e drills, screwdrivers, impacts, etc.

  6. Ability to read and interpret blueprints & part schematics.

  7. Ability to read/write, perform basic arithmetic, and follow verbal and written instructions.
