Building Automation Service Technician
Cincinnati, OH | Full-Time | Field-Based
Comfort Systems USA Ohio
Position Summary
Comfort Systems USA Ohio is seeking an experienced Building Automation Service Technician to support commercial and industrial customers throughout the Cincinnati market.
This position is responsible for the service, troubleshooting, startup, commissioning, preventative maintenance, and optimization of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Controls (DDC), HVAC controls, and related building technologies.
The Building Automation Service Technician works independently in the field while partnering with customers, technicians, project teams, and other internal resources to diagnose system issues, complete repairs and adjustments, and help ensure building systems operate reliably, efficiently, and according to design intent.
Key Responsibilities
Building Automation Service & Troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoot and service BAS, DDC, HVAC control systems, controllers, sensors, actuators, relays, control panels, low-voltage wiring, and communication networks.
  • Diagnose system and equipment performance issues and complete necessary repairs, adjustments, or component replacements.
  • Respond to customer service calls and resolve controls-related issues efficiently while minimizing customer downtime.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and system optimization to improve comfort, reliability, energy efficiency, and overall system performance.

Startup, Commissioning & System Support
  • Perform system startup, commissioning, functional testing, and point-to-point checkout.
  • Verify inputs and outputs, device communication, equipment operation, and control sequences.
  • Modify programming, schedules, setpoints, graphics, alarms, trends, and control sequences as needed.
  • Support controller replacements, system upgrades, retrofit projects, and other BAS service activities.
  • Work with BAS communication protocols and networks, including BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, and IP-based networks.

Technical & Customer Support
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, control diagrams, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, blueprints, sequences of operation, and technical documentation.
  • Troubleshoot commercial HVAC equipment and controls associated with air handlers, rooftop units, VAV systems, chillers, boilers, pumps, VFDs, dampers, valves, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Communicate technical findings, recommended repairs, and system operation clearly and professionally with customers.
  • Build and maintain positive customer relationships through responsive and professional field service.

Documentation & Safety
  • Maintain accurate electronic service reports, work orders, inspection notes, and other required documentation.
  • Document system changes, repairs, programming modifications, and customer communication accurately and timely.
  • Follow company safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and established field service practices.
  • Maintain company tools, equipment, and assigned resources appropriately.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Controls (DDC), HVAC controls, or commercial building control systems.
  • Working knowledge of commercial HVAC equipment, electrical systems, mechanical systems, and control system operation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control diagrams, mechanical drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to work independently in the field, prioritize service calls, and accurately document completed work.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Niagara N4/Tridium or other BAS platforms such as Schneider Electric, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Automated Logic, Alerton, Distech, or Delta Controls.
  • Experience with BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, TCP/IP networking, IP addressing, and commercial building communication networks.
  • Experience with BAS programming, graphics, alarms, trend logs, scheduling, point mapping, sequence verification, controller replacement, system upgrades, and network troubleshooting.
  • Experience with commercial HVAC service, commissioning, systems integration, energy management systems, or smart building technologies.
  • Trade school, vocational training, military technical training, HVAC, electrical, controls training, or equivalent hands-on technical experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong technical curiosity and willingness to continue developing BAS and HVAC controls knowledge.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues methodically and independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple service priorities in a field environment.
