The Department of Engineering in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Transportation at South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, South Carolina is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Transportation with special emphasis in connected and autonomous transportation systems. The position is available starting Spring 2026. Candidates with diverse research interests are encouraged to apply by demonstrating how their research supports planning, design, and operation of connected and autonomous transportation systems. The position is expected to be filled at the Assistant Professor level, however the Associate Professor level will be considered. Candidates applying at the Associate Professor level must have a well-established academic record, including scholarly publications, teaching, and externally-funded research.
The successful applicant will be required to teach graduate level courses in Transportation as well as undergraduate level courses in Civil Engineering or general undergraduate Engineering courses within the Department and/or College; develop a sustained, externally-funded research program; mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students; and provide departmental, college, and university service. An earned doctorate in Transportation or in a closely related field from a U.S. Institution is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies are also necessary.
All areas of expertise within transportation will be given full consideration. The intellectual depth, innovation, and promise of the candidates, as well as their ability to participate in multidisciplinary research collaborations, are of higher priority than their specific research areas. Areas of particular interest to support the Department's enhanced focus on collaborations throughout the College and University include: Inertial navigation, positioning and geomatics; Application of sensing technologies in support of smart cities initiatives; Implementation, operation, and analysis of connected and autonomous vehicles (CV/AV) systems; Big data applications in transportation operations.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
1. Teaching undergraduate classes and laboratories in civil
engineering in general, transportation in particular, as well as graduate courses in area of specialization;
2. Developing and maintaining externally-funded research programs;
3. Engaging in activities related to service in the form of student
club advising and curriculum development.
