Job description

Perfusionist II

Location – Texarkana, TX

Summary:

The Perfusionist is responsible for operating and managing cardiopulmonary pumps, Cell Saver and autotransfusion equipment, and intra-aortic balloon pumps during invasive cardiovascular procedures. This role provides critical support to surgeons and clinical teams. Additional related duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide patient care support during surgical procedures requiring perfusion services.
  • Operate cardiopulmonary bypass equipment during open-heart surgery.
  • Set up and operate left and right heart bypass systems.
  • Operate extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) devices and total or partial artificial heart console systems.
  • Set up and manage intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) systems in the OR, cardiac catheterization lab, ICU, or other clinical areas.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in heparin and protamine management, including anticoagulation titration and analysis systems.
  • Serve as an advisor to the surgical team regarding the administration of cardiac medications when applicable.
  • Operate autotransfusion (cell saver) equipment for cardiovascular, orthopedic, vascular, and other procedures requiring blood conservation.
  • Apply strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, cardiology, surgical techniques, physiologic monitoring, and patient care.
  • Review relevant anatomy and histology to support clinical decision-making related to disease processes.
  • Assist with IABP insertion and setup across multiple clinical settings.
  • Ensure proper ordering, inventory management, and organization of perfusion supplies.
  • Clean and maintain heart–lung machines and related equipment per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Support quality assurance and infection control data collection as required.

Requirements:

Education/Skills:

  • Completion of an accredited perfusion education program required.

Experience:

  • Three years of experience preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Board-eligible or board-certified status through the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion preferred.
  • State perfusionist licensure preferred (as applicable).

Work Schedule:

  • Five 8-hour shifts per week
