Job Summary
The Writing Center Coordinator provides leadership and administrative oversight for the Northeast State Writing Center, coordinating services that support the development of writing, research, and communication skills for students across all instructional modalities. The Coordinator manages the daily operations of the Writing Center, supervises tutors, develops training programs, collaborates with faculty and academic divisions, and assesses the effectiveness of Writing Center services to improve student success.
The Coordinator promotes best practices in writing instruction, academic support, and college readiness while fostering a culture that values writing across the curriculum. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the Coordinator teaches six (6) credit hours annually to remain actively engaged in instruction and support institutional teaching and learning initiatives. The Coordinator reports to the Dean of Humanities.
Job Duties
  • Coordinate the daily operations of the Writing Center across all campuses and instructional modalities.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Writing Center services.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate Writing Center tutors and student employees.
  • Develop and facilitate tutor training and ongoing professional development to ensure high-quality writing support.
  • Develop and maintain tutor schedules to provide effective coverage across locations and service modalities.
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic divisions, and student support offices to promote writing support services and improve student success.
  • Develop and maintain online writing resources, instructional materials, and Writing Center website content.
  • Coordinate workshops and instructional programming related to academic writing, research, documentation styles, AI literacy, et cetera
  • Provide professional development opportunities for faculty related to writing instruction, writing across the curriculum, and effective use of Writing Center services.
  • Develop and maintain Writing Center policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Implement strategies to effectively serve diverse student populations, including multilingual learners and students with varying academic support needs.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data related to student usage, learning outcomes, tutor effectiveness, and program success.
  • Assist with development and management of the Writing Center budget and pursue grant and funding opportunities when appropriate.
  • Represent the Writing Center on institutional committees and initiatives related to student success, academic support, college readiness, and curriculum.
  • Teach six (6) credit hours annually in English or related coursework, consistent with qualifications and institutional needs.
  • Remain current in research and best practices related to writing center administration, writing pedagogy, tutoring, and student success.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Dean of Humanities.
  • Tutor students as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
• Master's degree in English or closely related field (i.e. Rhetoric and Composition) from an accredited institution
• Minimum of two years experience providing writing instruction or writing tutoring at the college level
Preferred Qualifications
• Doctorate or additional graduate work in English, Composition, Rhetoric, or related discipline from an accredited institution
• Experience working in a community college setting, with demonstrated understanding of the mission, student population, and academic support needs of community college students.
• Experience coordinating or managing a writing center or similar academic support program
• Experience supervising employees, professional tutors, peer tutors, or student workers
• Experience writing or administrating grants
• Conversational ability or fluency in a language other than English
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of writing pedagogy, writing center best practices, and academic support services.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to analyze data and use assessment results to improve programs and services.
• Ability to independently manage multiple projects and priorities.
• Technology Skills: MS Office suite; videoconferencing software; digital records management systems; general operating systems and data information systems
