The main difference between a Full Stack Software Developer and a Front End Developer lies in their scope of work. Full Stack Developers handle both front-end and back-end development, enabling them to build complete applications. Front End Developers focus solely on creating engaging user interfaces. Your choice depends on whether you prefer working across the entire tech stack or specializing in user-facing features.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Software Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of software development principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, server-side technologies like Node.js or Django, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is highly valued, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving, effective communication, and collaboration skills help you stand out in multidisciplinary teams and dynamic environments. These capabilities are essential for building robust, scalable applications and ensuring smooth project delivery across the software development lifecycle.

How does a Full Stack Software Developer typically collaborate with designers and other team members during a project?

Full Stack Software Developers often work closely with UI/UX designers, backend engineers, and product managers throughout the development process. They participate in planning sessions to understand design requirements, provide technical feedback, and help translate user interface mockups into functional features. Regular meetings and collaborative tools are usually employed to ensure alignment and smooth communication, making it essential for developers in this role to be proactive and open in sharing progress or challenges. This cross-functional teamwork helps deliver cohesive, user-friendly applications that meet business objectives.

At realtor.com®, Spotlight Listings and Agent Directory sit at the intersection of consumer decision-making and professional value creation. Spotlight Listings is a premium merchandising experience that helps agents increase listing visibility through enhanced presentation, branding, and placement, while Agent Directory helps consumers discover and evaluate the right real estate professional through richer profile content, better filtering, and stronger trust signals.
We are looking for a Staff Full Stack Software Engineer to serve as a technical anchor for this team, driving the architecture and delivery of experiences across web frontends, APIs, and supporting services. You will help shape premium listing experiences and agent discovery surfaces used by consumers at critical moments in their home journey, while building systems that also create measurable value for real estate professionals.
Tope 3 Reasons to Apply:
  • You will be leading a brand new team in a growing space in our Consumer organization.
  • You will be exposed to working with multiple teams to influence the product and technical roadmap of the experience.
  • You enjoy working in an environment where AI accelerates the engineering work you define.

What You'll Do:
As a Staff Engineer, you won't just write code; you will define the technical standards for how we build, scale, and evolve Spotlight Listings and Agent Directory across the stack.
  • Architectural Leadership: Own the end-to-end architecture of our consumer web experiences and the supporting backend services that power premium listing presentation, agent discovery, profile connections, and lead paths.
  • Full-Stack Platform Thinking: Design cohesive systems across React/Next.js frontends, Node.js services, GraphQL and REST APIs, experimentation layers, and operational observability so that client and server systems work together as a reliable platform.
  • Performance at Scale: Drive initiatives that improve Core Web Vitals, rendering performance, accessibility, resiliency, and software quality across some of our most important consumer-facing surfaces.
  • Premium Experience Innovation: Partner with Product, Design, and Data to build experiences that make listings feel more differentiated and informative, and that help consumers more confidently choose homes and agents.
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Work closely with partner teams across search, listing detail pages, profile systems, mobile, and platform services to align on integrations, rollout strategy, and long-term technical direction.
  • Technical Leadership: Raise the bar through design reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and the establishment of reusable patterns and paved-road approaches for other teams to build on.

What You'll Bring:
  • Technical Mastery: 8+ years of software engineering experience, including deep experience building consumer-facing web applications and backend services at scale. Strong proficiency with TypeScript, React, modern web tooling, and backend technologies such as Node.js, GraphQL, and REST APIs.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Systems Thinker: You are comfortable designing end-to-end solutions that span UI architecture, APIs, services, experimentation, analytics, and cloud-native infrastructure. You know how to build for scale, reliability, and long-term evolution.
  • Operational Excellence: You understand testing strategy, observability, CI/CD, and release quality, and you care deeply about building systems that are easy to operate and safe to change.
  • Mentorship and Culture: You raise the bar for the engineers around you through technical leadership, clear communication, thoughtful collaboration, and a strong sense of ownership.
  • Data-Driven: You are comfortable partnering with Product and Data teams to run experiments, interpret results, and use evidence to improve user and business outcomes.

How We Work:
We balance creativity and innovation on a foundation of in-person collaboration. For most roles, our employees work three or more days in our offices, where they have the opportunity to collaborate in-person, adding richness to our culture and knitting us closer together.
