What is a full stack software developer contract?

A Full Stack Software Developer Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where a developer is responsible for working on both the front-end and back-end of a software application. Contractors are typically hired for a set duration or until a project is completed and may work with multiple clients. They are expected to have expertise in various programming languages, frameworks, and databases to build and maintain complete web applications. This role often provides flexibility in work arrangements but requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to different tech stacks.

How to get contract work as a full stack software developer?

To secure contract work as a full stack software developer, build a strong portfolio showcasing your skills in front-end and back-end technologies, and establish a presence on freelance platforms like Upwork or Freelancer. Networking, obtaining relevant certifications, and demonstrating experience with popular tools such as JavaScript, Python, or cloud services can also increase your chances of landing contracts.

What are some typical challenges faced by full stack software developers in contract roles?

Full Stack Software Developers working on contract often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new codebases and team workflows, as projects may vary widely between clients. They may need to work independently while also collaborating with in-house developers, designers, and project managers to align on technical and business requirements. Adapting quickly and maintaining clear communication are key to ensuring successful project delivery and ongoing client satisfaction.

Is full stack software developer contract still in demand?

Full stack software developer contracts remain in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation and the need for versatile developers skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies like JavaScript, Python, and cloud platforms. Companies seek contractors for project-based work, especially those proficient in frameworks such as React, Angular, and Node.js, making contract roles a common and stable option in the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack software developer contract?

A Full Stack Software Developer on contract needs proficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, such as JavaScript frameworks, server-side languages, and databases, along with a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with tools like Git, containerization platforms (e.g., Docker), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud services, as well as relevant certifications, is often expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and strong communication skills are essential for efficiently collaborating in dynamic environments and managing multiple project requirements. These skills enable success in delivering high-quality, scalable solutions within set deadlines while meeting client or organizational needs.

We are seeking a Senior Fullstack Developer for our Identity and Access Management (IAM) Engineering team.
ย
As a Senior Developer, you will play a critical role in developing and maintaining all things IAM, including authentication, authorization, and identity. You'll contribute directly to the systems powering sign-up, login, SSO integrations, and our OAuth flows. This is how we like building software: https://fullscript.com/developer-handbook If you share our values, we'd be excited to talk with you!
What you'll do:
  • Collaborate with your pod - a small, focused team of full-stack engineers - to build and maintain IAM capabilities
  • Contribute to backend and frontend codebases with an eye toward reliability, scalability, and security
  • Participate in technical design discussions and help break down projects into clear, actionable tasks
  • Identify and suggest improvements to our authentication and authorization flows
  • Help support the maintenance and uptime of IAM systems, including investigating and resolving production issues
  • Work closely with product, security, and legal stakeholders to ensure compliance and integrity of user data and access
  • Stay informed on evolving security practices, frameworks, and technologies
What you bring to the table:
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to share knowledge and ideas with teammates
  • Passion for IAM and security - you care about protecting users and understanding the threat landscape
  • Experience with authentication protocols, SSO (SAML, OAuth), RBAC, and MFA
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Hands-on experience with modern web development - we use Ruby on Rails, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, GraphQL, and Apollo
  • A commitment to writing clean, maintainable code and fostering strong engineering practices
What we can offer you:
  • Generous PTO and competitive payย
  • Fullscript's RRSP match program for financial healthย
  • Flexible benefits package and workplace wellness program
  • Training budget and company-wide learning initiativesย
  • Discount on Fullscript catalog of productsย
  • Ability to work Wherever You Work Well*
*Our Wherever You Work Well philosophy means Fullscript teammates get to pick their own office - whether that's in-office, at home, or a bit of both
