Full Stack Developer information

What is a full stack developer?

A Full Stack Developer is a software professional who is skilled in both front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining complete web applications or systems, handling everything from user interfaces and databases to server logic and APIs. Full Stack Developers often work with a range of programming languages and frameworks, such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, and SQL, among others. Their versatility allows them to contribute to multiple stages of the software development lifecycle, making them valuable assets to development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web development principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, back-end environments like Node.js or Django, version control systems like Git, and possibly cloud platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills distinguish excellent developers, allowing them to work effectively in team environments and with stakeholders. These technical and soft skills are vital for building, maintaining, and optimizing complex, user-friendly web applications that meet business needs.

What are some common challenges full stack developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Developers often collaborate with designers, backend engineers, project managers, and QA testers, which can introduce challenges like aligning on project requirements and managing different technical perspectives. Coordinating between frontend and backend tasks while ensuring seamless integration is another common hurdle. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving technologies on both ends of the stack requires strong time management and continuous learning. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering cohesive solutions.

What is the difference between Full Stack Developer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack DeveloperFront End Developer
SkillsProficient in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams.Primarily involved in UI/UX design and front-end implementation in larger teams.

While both roles require strong web development skills, Full Stack Developers handle both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web projects. Front End Developers focus solely on creating engaging and responsive user interfaces. Understanding these differences helps employers and developers choose the right role for their project needs.

Is full stack developer still in demand?

Full stack developers are currently in high demand due to their ability to work on both front-end and back-end development, with skills in frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and database management. The role remains essential across industries, especially as companies prioritize versatile developers who can adapt to evolving technologies.

What will a full stack developer do?

A full stack developer designs, develops, and maintains both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work with languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side technologies, often using frameworks and tools such as React, Node.js, and databases. Full stack developers are responsible for ensuring seamless integration and functionality across all parts of a web project.

We believe deeply in fostering individual ownership, iterating to excellence, focusing on what matters, communicating openly & respectfully, and supporting one another.ย

We encourage people of all backgrounds to apply. Alloy.ai is committed to creating an inclusive culture, and we celebrate diversity of all kinds.

About the Role

Full-stack engineers tackle many exciting and complex challenges, such as modeling supply chains, implementing scalable and performant query systems, computing inventory recommendations and forecasts, building AI agents and assistants on top of LLMs, and building intuitive applications for sales, marketing, planning, and supply chain professionals.

On the frontend, you'll work with a modern web-stack, built with Typescript and React; on the backend you will work with Java. On the infrastructure side, you will be using Terraform, Kubernetes, and Python.

In this role, you will:
  • Directly contribute to the product definition by working closely with our product managers and designers and build a shared understanding of problems.
  • Leverage LLM coding agents to increase your code writing and reviewing velocity, while maintaining high standards of code quality.
  • Write simple and extensible code that your colleagues love to read.
  • Own quality. You'll keep the bugs out by building a deep understanding of what to build, writing tests, and carefully reviewing the code of others.
  • Focus on simplicity in software design, and focus on delivering incremental value.
  • Have individual ownership of complex, high-impact problems across the stack.
  • Lean on others when needed and let others lean on you by mentoring them in areas of your unique strengths.
You'll be a great fit at Alloy if:
  • The real world and its complexity are fascinating to you. You're innately curious about how products reach consumers efficiently and sustainably.
  • You are a doer - when you see a problem that needs to be tackled, you deliver incrementally and plan ahead. You have an appetite for learning and embrace ambiguity; you don't easily give up.ย
  • You enjoy working with others to identify the highest-priority engineering work and build solutions that you're proud of.
  • Asynchronous communication is second nature to you. You express complex ideas in an easy-to-understand and respectful manner - both in spoken and written language.
  • You enjoy uplifting others and taking risks together. Learning about and promoting engineering best practices excites you.
  • You enjoy actively contributing to an inclusive and high-performing engineering culture that will attract more world-class talent just like yourself.
  • You have experience or are excited about learning the technologies we use.
There's a good chance we didn't get this right! Like with many other things in life, this job description is a work in progress. We'd love to hear from you and what would make you a great fit in ourย engineering team!
What you'll get for joining:
  • Base salary $85,000 - $140,000 CAD
  • Substantial equity package
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • RRSP Matching
  • Comprehensive health coverage
  • Professional development budget
  • Monthly Transit Reimbursement
  • Support from highly experienced mentors
  • Genuine and welcoming teammates
  • Quarterly team events
  • Fully stocked snack-shelf
  • Paid parental leave
$85,000 - $140,000 a year
This role is a hybrid based in Vancouver, B.C. Hybrid is defined by our company as 3+ days/week in the office when not on vacation. Remote employees will not be considered for this role.ย
Our engineering culture emphasizes code reviews, mentorship, and collaboration. We foster individual ownership of engineering work across our teams and lean on each others' strengths when needed. We strive to write clear, extensible code that your colleagues love to read and keep the bug backlog in check. We focus heavily on promoting best practices for code quality, automation, and testing.
ย
Technologies we use
ย
Java, PostgreSQL, TypeScript, React, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Vertex AI, Vite, SASS, Cypress, jOOQ, Dropwizard, Guava, Redis, Python, Pandas, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, Prophet, Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, PubSub, Kubernetes, Terraform, Docker
ย
Our values
ย
Focus on what matters: Reevaluate priorities as necessary to pick the work that will have the highest impact to the customer and business. Work hard in a way that is sustainable. Choose the schedule that lets you achieve your best. Measure results, not hours. Respect your time and that of others; come prepared and leave with commitments.
ย
Take ownership: Take initiative by proactively identifying opportunities or issues and tackling them. Strive for excellence. Hold yourself and your colleagues to a high standard. Create something that makes you proud. Follow through on our commitments to customers, users, and each other. We are all doers, regardless of role - no task is beneath you.
ย
Iterate to excellence: Prefer action over perfection to learn quickly from early feedback. Be flexible and accept the need to make tradeoffs and change directions. Everything is a work in progress, nothing is done. Question prevailing assumptions, but understand them first. Gather evidence and champion ideas that will make our products and our company better. Verify and validate.
ย
Communicate openly and respectfully: Offer and expect transparency to build trust. Confirm mutual understanding, especially in the face of disagreement. Treat each other with respect. Criticize constructively - the work, not the person.
ย
Have each other's back: When interacting with each other, always assume good intentions. Trust each other and take risks together. Give praise generously and take joy in others' accomplishments. Grow a diverse team by actively seeking different backgrounds and cultivating an inclusive culture. Focus on how others' strengths compliment us, rather than how their weaknesses invalidate them.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
