What is a full stack application developer?

A Full Stack Application Developer is a software professional who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. This means they can work on the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and sometimes even deployment and infrastructure. Full Stack Developers are versatile and can handle multiple aspects of building and maintaining web applications. Their broad skill set allows them to work across the entire technology stack, making them valuable assets to development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack application developer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Application Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, database systems (SQL or NoSQL), version control (Git), and potentially certifications like AWS Certified Developer are commonly expected. Problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills, enabling collaboration and efficient troubleshooting. These combined skills ensure the ability to independently build, maintain, and scale robust applications that meet user and business needs.

What are some common challenges full stack application developers face when managing both front-end and back-end tasks?

Full Stack Application Developers often encounter the challenge of balancing priorities between front-end user experience and back-end system performance. Staying proficient in a wide range of technologies and frameworks can be demanding, especially as projects scale or new tools are adopted. Effective communication with both UI/UX designers and server-side engineers is essential to ensure cohesive integration and smooth workflows. Adapting to frequent context switching and troubleshooting across the entire stack requires strong organizational skills and a proactive approach to learning.

The selected individual will establish technical direction, development standards, and operational plans while partnering with business and IT leaders to deliver scalable, high-quality applications that integrate backend logic, data pipelines, APIs, and ontology objects to modernize business operations across L3Harris.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in full-stack application development, UI/UX design principles, and modern data platforms with proven experience leading technical teams, developing talent, and translating business priorities into intuitive, scalable, user-centered solutions. This individual is passionate about delivering high-quality user experiences and establishing development standards that balance usability, performance, maintainability, and business value.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a hands-on technical leader by providing architectural guidance, mentoring developers, reviewing solution designs, resolving complex technical challenges, and contributing directly to application development when needed to support delivery priorities.
  • Establish technical direction, development standards, coding practices, and application architecture to ensure scalable, secure, maintainable, and high-quality solutions.
  • Oversee the design, development, testing, deployment, and lifecycle management of user-facing applications, workflows, dashboards, APIs, data pipelines, and ontology-driven solutions.
  • Establish and promote UI/UX design standards and best practices, ensuring applications provide intuitive, accessible, and consistent user experiences while partnering with business stakeholders to continuously improve usability and adoption.
  • Lead the planning, prioritization, and execution of application development activities, ensuring alignment with business priorities, operational plans, and delivery commitments.
  • Partner with business stakeholders, Product Owners, Data Architecture, Data Engineering, Platform Engineering, and IT leadership to define requirements and deliver scalable, data-driven solutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement of development processes, software engineering practices, application performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead technical problem solving, root cause analysis, and resolution of complex application, data integration, and platform issues spanning multiple business functions.
  • Ensure solutions adhere to enterprise standards for security, governance, usability, performance, and reliability.
  • Manage team staffing, performance, coaching, career development, hiring, and resource planning while fostering a collaborative, customer-focused, and high-performing team culture
  • Communicate technical strategy, project status, delivery risks, and operational performance to leadership and executive stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain application standards, technical documentation, operational procedures, and development best practices while supporting the ongoing evolution of enterprise application and analytics capabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Familiarity with React-style component patterns or comparable front-end frameworks.
  • Experience with ontology modeling and object-driven application logic.
  • Experience with Python for backend automation or processing.
  • Knowledge of enterprise data systems (SAP, Oracle EBS, Costpoint, REST APIs)
  • Experience with AI tools such as OpenAI, Palantir AIP, Snowflake Cortex, or similar.
  • Experience designing workflow automations and operational tools within Foundry.
  • Experience leading application development teams within Palantir Foundry.
  • Experience with enterprise application architecture and ontology-driven solution design.
