What is a full stack application developer?

A Full Stack Application Developer is a software professional who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. This means they can work on the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and sometimes even deployment and infrastructure. Full Stack Developers are versatile and can handle multiple aspects of building and maintaining web applications. Their broad skill set allows them to work across the entire technology stack, making them valuable assets to development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack application developer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Application Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, database systems (SQL or NoSQL), version control (Git), and potentially certifications like AWS Certified Developer are commonly expected. Problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills, enabling collaboration and efficient troubleshooting. These combined skills ensure the ability to independently build, maintain, and scale robust applications that meet user and business needs.

What are some common challenges full stack application developers face when managing both front-end and back-end tasks?

Full Stack Application Developers often encounter the challenge of balancing priorities between front-end user experience and back-end system performance. Staying proficient in a wide range of technologies and frameworks can be demanding, especially as projects scale or new tools are adopted. Effective communication with both UI/UX designers and server-side engineers is essential to ensure cohesive integration and smooth workflows. Adapting to frequent context switching and troubleshooting across the entire stack requires strong organizational skills and a proactive approach to learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable full-stack applications and services.
  • Contribute to all layers of the technology stack, including frontend, backend, APIs, databases, integrations, and cloud environments.
  • Build and enhance highly scalable web applications and mobile experiences used by members.
  • Develop RESTful APIs and backend services that support digital and omnichannel experiences.
  • Partner with product managers, UX teams, architects, data teams, and other engineers to translate business requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Participate in technical architecture and solution design discussions.
  • Develop high-quality, maintainable, and secure code while following modern engineering practices.
  • Review pull requests and provide constructive technical feedback.
  • Troubleshoot complex application and production issues and drive problems through resolution.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, automation, application performance, and developer productivity.
  • Mentor and support other engineers while contributing to a collaborative engineering culture.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and evaluate new frameworks, tools, and approaches where appropriate.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development and code-generation tools to improve engineering productivity and solution delivery.
Technology Environment

The team works with a modern technology stack that may include:

  • JSON and client-server integrations
  • Kubernetes, Docker, AKS, or similar container/orchestration technologies
  • Infrastructure and security as code
  • CI/CD and modern DevOps practices
  • AI-assisted development and emerging agentic/AI technologies

Experience with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), Adobe Experience Platform (AEP), Adobe Journey Optimizer (AJO), personalization, or digital experience platforms is a plus.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience, preferably within large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience developing full-stack applications and services.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages, with .NET/C# or Java/Spring Boot highly valued.
  • Experience developing scalable web applications using technologies such as Vue.js, React, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with RESTful web services, APIs, JSON, and client-server architecture.
  • Experience with Azure or another major cloud provider.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or AKS.
  • Understanding of solution architecture, scalable application design, and backend architecture.
  • Ability to work independently with incomplete or evolving requirements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with senior technical and business stakeholders.
  • Experience with mobile application development, particularly React Native, is a plus.
  • Experience with AI/agentic AI or AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude is a plus.
  • Experience with Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Experience Platform, Adobe Journey Optimizer, or personalization technologies is a plus.
