What are Full Mechanics?

Full Mechanics are skilled professionals responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of vehicles or machinery. They handle everything from routine maintenance, such as oil changes and brake repairs, to complex engine diagnostics and overhauls. Full Mechanics often work in automotive shops, dealerships, or industrial settings, and are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of mechanical, electrical, and computer systems. Their expertise ensures that vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently.

What is the difference between Full Mechanic vs Automotive Technician?

CertificationsASE Certified, State LicensesASE Certified, State Licenses
Work EnvironmentAuto repair shops, dealershipsAuto repair shops, dealerships
Job ResponsibilitiesDiagnosing, repairing, maintaining vehiclesDiagnosing, repairing, maintaining vehicles
Industry UsageCommon term for skilled auto repair workersOften used interchangeably with Full Mechanic

Full Mechanics and Automotive Technicians typically share similar certifications, work environments, and job duties. The terms are often used interchangeably in the automotive industry, focusing on diagnosing and repairing vehicles. While 'Full Mechanic' emphasizes a comprehensive skill set, 'Automotive Technician' is a more commonly used title in job listings. Both roles require similar credentials and work in similar settings, making them closely related in the automotive repair industry.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

Full mechanics can earn around $3,000 a month through experience and certifications, especially in specialized fields like diesel or aircraft maintenance. Many of these roles require technical skills, on-the-job training, and sometimes ASE certifications, but they do not always require a college degree. Earnings vary based on location, experience, and employer, with some mechanics working full-time or overtime to reach this income level.

What are some common challenges Full Mechanics face when diagnosing complex vehicle issues?

Full Mechanics often encounter challenges when diagnosing complex problems, especially as vehicles become more reliant on advanced electronics and computer systems. Pinpointing the root cause requires a combination of hands-on experience, up-to-date technical knowledge, and the ability to use diagnostic tools effectively. Collaborating with other technicians and staying informed about manufacturer updates can help overcome these challenges. Continuous learning and adaptability are key to success in this ever-evolving field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Mechanic, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, strong diagnostic abilities, and relevant certifications such as ASE or equivalent technical training. Familiarity with diagnostic software, hand and power tools, and vehicle maintenance systems is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication with customers and team members are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate repairs, safety, and high-quality service in a fast-paced automotive environment.

New York, NY • On-site

Job description

About Silana
Silana is building the world's first fully automated robotic sewing systems - machines that produce garments start-to-finish with industrial precision. Our work combines robotics, automation, and textile engineering to redefine how apparel is made.
We're based in Midtown Manhattan and operate at the intersection of mechanical engineering, robotics, and advanced manufacturing. We move fast, iterate constantly, and develop real machines that will run in production.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Design, prototype, and validate complex mechanical assemblies for robotic manufacturing systems.
  • Own the full mechanical design cycle - from concept sketches to production-ready CAD, drawings, and BOMs.
  • Collaborate across disciplines (controls, robotics, and vision) to ensure mechanical, electrical, and software systems integrate seamlessly.
  • Drive design-for-assembly (DFA) and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) principles across the product line to reduce build time, improve reliability, and enable scaling.
  • Oversee prototype builds and assembly, translating design intent into physical hardware with precision and clarity.
  • Participating in the full product development cycle from concept through production.

Who You Are
  • You're a hands-on designer who thrives on turning concepts into real, robust machines.
  • You care deeply about fit, finish, and functional precision, not just "making it work."
  • You understand the interplay between design intent, assembly workflow, and production yield.
  • You enjoy working on fast-moving projects where iteration speed matters.
  • You're direct, collaborative, and have a high bar for yourself and others.

Requirements
  • 3+ years of professional mechanical design experience in robotics, automation, or precision machinery.
  • Proven track record of shipping actual automation or robotic machinery
  • Expert in SolidWorks or Onshape with a strong understanding of assemblies, configurations, and drawing control.
  • Proven experience taking designs from concept → prototype → production.
  • Deep knowledge of mechanical design principles, including GD&T, tolerancing, materials, and manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, plastics, composites).
  • Strong background in DFM/DFA and building systems that are easy to assemble, maintain, and service.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing and basic shop equipment.
  • Experience collaborating with suppliers, contract manufacturers, and machine shops.
  • Familiarity with robotics, motion control, or automation systems (conveyors, fixtures, precision alignment mechanisms) is a major plus.

Nice to Have
  • Experience designing high-precision, multi-actuator systems or automated cells for production environments.
  • Familiarity with ROS-based robotic systems or mechatronic integration.

Practical Details
  • Location: Midtown Manhattan, New York, on-site only.
  • Compensation: $100,000 - $120,000 base salary, plus equity and benefits.

Why Silana
This is not a "desk CAD" role. You'll work where hardware is built - surrounded by robots, motion systems, and real-time testing.
If you want to own full mechanical systems, push the limits of design for automation, and see your work ship into production - this is the place.
