What does a frontend software engineer intern do?

A Frontend Software Engineer Intern assists in designing and developing the user-facing parts of websites or web applications. They typically work with technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and may use frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js. Their responsibilities often include implementing visual elements, ensuring responsive design, fixing bugs, and collaborating with designers and backend developers. This role provides hands-on experience in creating interactive and accessible user interfaces, while learning best practices in coding and teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend software engineer intern?

To thrive as a Frontend Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and basic programming principles, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems such as Git, and tools like npm or webpack is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate and collaborate within a team are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure you can effectively contribute to building user-friendly, efficient web interfaces while learning and adapting in a dynamic tech environment.

What are some common challenges faced by frontend software engineer interns during their internship?

Frontend Software Engineer Interns often face challenges such as adapting to new frameworks and development tools, understanding and following established codebases, and balancing the need for clean, maintainable code with tight project deadlines. Interns may also find it challenging to communicate effectively with designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of UI and functionality. However, these challenges offer valuable learning opportunities and help interns quickly develop technical and collaborative skills in a real-world setting.

Description
The Opportunity:
At Wize Solutions, we don't just do the job-we set the standard. Headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT, we operate in all 50 states and internationally, delivering top-tier solutions with a relentless commitment to excellence. Our growth speaks for itself: in 2024 alone, we expanded from 120 to nearly 500 employees, and we're just getting started.
What fuels our success? Our people. We believe that when our employees thrive, our company thrives. That's why we invest in a culture that feels like family-where every team member is valued, supported, and given opportunities to grow. Through both tangible benefits and the intangibles that make a workplace truly great, we ensure that working at Wize Solutions isn't just a job-it's a career worth building. If you're looking for a place where you can make an impact and grow alongside a rapidly scaling company, we'd love to have you on board.
As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll have the opportunity to put emerging technology to work on real business problems. You'll work directly with our Chief Technology Officer to research, prototype, build, and test AI-powered tools, software automations, and system integrations that improve how our Operations, Sales, and Leadership teams' work.
Wize Solutions installs warehouse racking, warehouse automation, and dock and door systems. As we replace a patchwork of spreadsheets and disconnected software with a modern technology platform built around Acumatica, you'll have the opportunity to work on projects that connect systems, eliminate repetitive work, and make better use of our data.
This is primarily a software engineering, automation, and R&D role-not a traditional IT help desk position. You'll have meaningful ownership over projects and the freedom to propose ideas while working closely with the CTO to determine priorities, scope, and technical approach. The things you build may be used by real Wize employees and have a measurable impact on how we operate.
Who You Are:
  • You are curious, self-motivated, and excited by the opportunity to learn how new technology can solve real-world business problems.
  • You are a problem solver who enjoys building things and wants direct involvement in AI and automation and software integrations for teams across Wize Solutions.
  • You have a strong technical foundation and are comfortable learning new programming languages, frameworks, APIs, and tools as needed.
  • You are comfortable finding solutions to technical and business challenges and can communicate your findings clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally.
  • You are detail oriented and understand that small technical details can have significant impacts on system performance, data quality, security, and business processes.
  • You are willing to ask questions early, seek feedback, and work collaboratively with the CTO and other Wize team members.
  • You are genuinely curious about AI. You already experiment with AI tools, coding assistants, or LLMs and have thoughtful opinions about where AI can and cannot add value.
  • You understand the importance of protecting confidential company information and using AI and technology responsibly.

Requirements
What You'll Own:
  • Research emerging AI tools, technologies, and development approaches and prototype them against real problems in Operations, Sales, and Leadership.
  • Build and test AI-assisted tools and business automations designed to eliminate repetitive manual work and improve efficiency.
  • Use OKRs and other measurable outcomes to evaluate whether the tools and automations you build are creating business impacts.
  • Develop scripts, applications, and other software solutions that improve internal processes and reduce reliance on manual spreadsheets and disconnected systems.
  • Connect internal systems and applications to Acumatica using REST APIs, webhooks, scheduled SFTP transfers, and other integration technologies.
  • Work with LLM APIs and emerging technologies such as Model Context Protocol (MCP) to explore new ways of connecting AI to business processes and data.
  • Work directly with the CTO on special R&D projects, presenting findings and recommendations on what works, what doesn't, and what Wize should consider adopting.
  • Help troubleshoot and test software integrations, automations, and internal applications to ensure they work reliably and as intended.
  • Occasionally assist with basic technical support, including laptop setup, software configuration, and general end-user troubleshooting.
  • Create concise, practical documentation for the tools, integrations, and processes you build.
  • Propose new ideas for using technology to improve how Wize Solutions operates and take ownership of turning promising ideas into proof-of-concepts.

Experience You'll Need:
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated programming experience through personal projects, self-directed learning, previous internships, or other experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and debug software in at least two programming languages, with the ability and willingness to learn additional languages and technologies.
  • Basic understanding of APIs and how software systems communicate with one another.
  • Experience with Git or another version control system, or a demonstrated willingness to learn.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to break complex problems into manageable steps.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while knowing when to ask questions or seek guidance.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, SQL, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Experience working with REST APIs, webhooks, SFTP, or other integration technologies.
  • Experience building applications using LLM or other AI APIs.
  • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) or similar AI integration technologies.
  • Experience with Claude Code or other AI-powered development tools.
  • Experience with AWS, GCP, or other cloud platforms.
  • Experience with Acumatica, ERP systems, accounting software, or other business applications.
  • Experience with business analytics, reporting, or data visualization.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Personal, academic, open-source, or professional software projects. We care about what you can build and how you think-not just where you learned it.

Details:
  • Pay: $20-$25 per hour, based on experience and technical proficiency.
  • Hours: 15-25 hours per week, with flexibility around class schedules. This is an ongoing position and is not limited to a single semester.
  • Location: Hybrid, with regular days at our Sandy, Utah office.
  • Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the United States.
